2001 Super Glide Lower Fork Tubes Paint Stripping and Polishing Project Note: No Power Tools were used for this Project. Everything was done by Hand and lots of Elbow Grease
SUPPLIES I used a number of products when used correctly did a great job for this Project. Read all instructions before using. I do not indorse any of these products. They are pictured here for informational purposes only. Rags, old and new to wipe off / polish the tubes. Rubber gloves, paint brush, and a water bucket.
This slide shows how bad the pool chemicals damaged the forks. First look at the damage.
A closer View
Impossible task? Maybe
First we remove the Brake Caliper.
Caliper must be hung with a bungee cord so to keep tension off the brake lines.
Caliper removed. Next we loosen the Axel Nut.
We must move over to the other side and remove the Pinch Bolt.
Take a Mallet and gently tap out the Axle.
While we have the Axle out lets clean it.
I use Brake Cleaner to clean the old Anti Seize lubricant from the Axle. Note: You will have to apply a light coating of this stuff before Axel installation.
Time to remove the fender
Fender removal.
I removed the reflector with some fishing line I had lying around.
Tape the Fork Covers so the chrome and seals don't get damaged.
Brushing on some paint remover that’s going to soak over night.
The polishing process is very boring. So I already finished one of the Fork Tubes.
Another view of the finished fork.
Hear I’m using the course 3M pad and starting to remove the paint from the fork.
After using 3M’s course, medium, and fine buffing pads. Both Forks are done. I also used a buffing compound to bring out the chrome like shine.
A closer view.
The end result.
Final Notes I did not show any of the reassembly because this Project can be done to any make or model motorcycle. If you are considering doing a Project like this you should have a Service Manual for your bike. It will have the exact procedures that you should follow so you can put your motorcycle safely back together. After the Project the bike was Custom Detailed by Biker Joe’s Motorcycle Detailing.
