THE Street Elephants Alert Project Stop and think twice before feeding an elephant on the street because this will lead to even more elephants being forced to beg on the streets…
Introduction to SEA project: The “Street Elephants Alert” project (SEA) promotes and supports the laws against the cruelty of elephants being made to beg on the city streets. Our main objective is to raise funds for associations (such as Thai AGA) and for the Government so that they could provide natural habitats in which elephants are suitable to live in. Moreover, we want to raise awareness of the problems of these elephants to the Thai community, so that they could help sick elephants that encounter city accidents. We also want citizens to think twice before feeding the street elephants because this will lead to even more elephants being forced to beg on the streets.
Why elephants? Wild elephants: about 2,000 Home elephants: about 3,000 Thai elephants in total: 5,000 Every year, at least 2% of Thai elephants (around 100 elephants) die mostly from city accidents and by natural causes The ratio of dead elephants to new born elephants is 1: 10 Source: http://www.asian-elephant.org/default_t.shtml
When you see these pictures, do you bring up questions such as “Shouldn’t these elephants be living in the wild?” or “What is an elephant here doing in the city?”
To become a street begging elephant, many of the baby elephants were separated from their mothers and were forced to go through the cruel ceremony before being trained.
Here are more pictures showing the brutal nature of the elephant trainers.
Some elephants were abused by their owners (the mahouts)…
This elephant was permanently disabled during training
These elephants have no choice but to sleep in piles of waste in the city
Some “Street-begging” Elephants encountered city accidents…
From these pictures, we realize that:
Elephants should not deserve to be treated as beggars! Elephants were important in past history. The white elephant was once used to symbolize Thailand’s national flag before the current three-colored flag.
http://lib.payap.ac.th/ntic/p%20place.htm DO REALIZE THAT: We depend on elephants to do work that we couldn’t have done by ourselves. e.g. carrying logs around in the forest.
Thailand does not have rigid laws against the elephants that were made to enter the city as to beg on the streets. Loophole in law The legislation of year 1940 allowed home elephants to become draught animals like cows, dears, and horses.
Goals 1. Corporate with Thai Animal Guardians Association (Thai AGA) to collect citizens’ names in the “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act B.E” forms in order to force the promulgation in the Royal Government’s Gazette. 2. To raise awareness and educate kids in the community to have right beliefs about elephants in order to change their perspectives on supporting street begging elephants. 3. Help sick elephants that encounter accidents in the cities by donate the raised funds to our affiliated foundations.
