MAKING ETHICAL CHOICES Internet Resource Use Guide

Slide 2

A Common Belief: Students often think that any resources they can grab from the net should be theirs for the taking.

Slide 3

Look at it this way: Does leaving your car open give people the right to take what they want – just because you made it easy?

Slide 4

No?

Slide 5

Many people feel the same way about their work. It’s their property.

Slide 6

When you take the work of others, remix it, & present it as your own without obtaining permission or giving credit …

Slide 7

… you are disrespecting their efforts & creativity.

Slide 8

And that’s a form of stealing.

Slide 10

Remember: Just because you think no one is being hurt is not a good enough reason to take what is not yours. (by permission)

Slide 11

Slide 12

So I expect you to ...

Slide 13

USE PUBLIC DOMAIN & CC RESOURCES ~Music & Sounds ~ ~Videos~ ~Images~ ~Media Collections~

Slide 14

Obtain permission in writing before using ©opyright material List all sources in every project Link to a bibliography Annotate your bibliography to make it easy to check -- add information that tells how/where you used each source. CREDIT ALL SOURCES USED Hint: keep the login and password the same so you make the account easy to find!

Summary: This presentation is to encourage students to make ethical use of online resources. Links to Creative Commons and public domain sites are provided.
