In Romania in winter are specific the carols (“COLINDE”) , wonderful songs of Christmas who marked the Nativity or “ Mos Craciun” and “Mos Ajun”. Other traditions of our country are: the “Star”, the “Goat”, the "Bear". For the last customs some young people are dressed oneself in goat (for the Christmas) or in bear (for the New Year) and they play where are the girls who go to married. Also, in the eve of the New Year, the children go with the "Uratul" to the people of our town, in the neighbour villages to announce through sound of jingle bells a better New Year and more rich than the last year. In the first day on the New Year, children go with "Sorcova”. Sonia

The carol singers walk in the streets of the villages and towns holding in their hands a star made of board and paper with biblical scenes painted in water colors and they sing: "Do you receive the pretty star, Pretty and so very bright? It Haseko we did in the sky Just like God thought it would be right, Stand it could be seen on high, Just like we did in the sky“.

In traditional Romanian rural society, preparations for colinde started well in advance (sometimes weeks) before Christmas. Then, starting on Christmas Eve, the groups would go to different houses and begin singing. In some villages, they go first to the mayor's house, followed by the teacher's house, whereas in other parts there is no pre-established order. The families would invite them into the house, and give them different small gifts such as nuts, dried fruits and pretzels. Examples of colinde are: "Astăzi s-a născut Hristos" (Today Christ was born), "Moş Crăciun cu plete dalbe" (White-haired Santa Claus) and "O, ce veste minunată!“ (What Wonderful News!). Beatrice

If we have to talk about how Christmas can be spent in Mioveni town, we should begin with the big attraction: the huge fireworks in front of the Town Hall. Those who decide to rest in town go there to admire them.

But most people prefer to go to the villages in the neighbourhood which are in fact their native places. Some of them go to mountain resorts, mainly in Poiana Brasov, without being afraid of the ghost of Count Dracula. On Christmas Day his ghost stays hidden in Bran Castle in order to not disturb such a special day for people. The tables are full of foods and drinks but the most important thing is the fact that all the members of a family are together.

Five days before Christmas with a very sharp knife the pig is cut. This custom is called "Ignatius" from Saint Ignatius (celebrated on December the 20th). Straws are put in his snout and then it is covered with burning straws and then is it singed. The pig is nicely washed and covered with a piece of cloth for ten minutes. The housewife comes and incense the pig and then the husband comes and makes the sign of the cross on the pig's head saying to the family gathered around: "Let's eat the pig!" After the pig is cut there is a feast called the pig's funeral feast or alms. At the feast the whole family friends and neighbors take part. All eat the rid or the skin of the bacon and they also eat small pieces of fried pork they drink wine or plum brandy. Radu
