Football – informal Tournament The beginning of a new year, and the Senior Football Team at Canbury started where they had left off really— winning all three of the opening games in the pre-season “kick-about” at Goals, Wimbledon. Seniors Win all 3 4 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009
Football – informal Tournament- Seniors Thames Christian College and Centre Academy were joined by Moon Hall College—who made their first journey up the A3 from Reigate. Unfortunately it may be Moon Hall College’s last trip to us – but we are still happy to go down and play them in the countryside. 5 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009
Football – informal Tournament- Seniors Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009 6 v TCC “A” won 3-1. A more even game than this score line suggested, TCC went a goal up. Pressure resulting in an own goal meant the half time score was even. Goals from William B & Dylan L in 2nd half. v CA “A” won 8-2. Canbury proved far too good for our rivals from Battersea Hill. v Moon Hall College won 4-1. Once again the home side went a goal down. However, by half time Dylan L and Will B had put us ahead, and further goals were added by Will B and Angus. Pouya played well in the unfamiliar environment of goal whilst the remaining out players all contributed. The B Team had an historic first win v TCC B Team winning 2-0, and narrowly lost to CA 2-3.

Ibstock 7-a-side Tournament Junior Team v Portland Place B team won 2-1 Canbury started very well, and had quite a few attacks—captain Mazigh struck a couple of blistering shots on target which the Portland keeper did very well to save. Half time still 0-0. The goals came from Dylan M—who scored both times from “goal mouth scrambles.” Right at the end Portland were awarded a penalty—which Owen almost saved. v The Harrodian A team lost 0-5 v Ibstock Place B team lost 0-4 In the play-off for 5th/6th place lost to Portland A team 11 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009
Ibstock 7-a-side Tournament Junior Team Overall 6th out of 8. A decent result considering the numbers that these school are choosing from. An excellent experience – we hope to get invited again next year. Almost saved by Owen! 12 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009
Ibstock 7-a-side Tournament Senior Team no photographs available – shown here as rivals… this tournament was very much a TCC/CAN Team effort Torrential Rain Mrs Dannatt took the team to Roehampton where Steve Walters from TCC took over as Team Manager for the afternoon I got this summary from Mr Walters: “The team gelled really well – who’d have thought 3 or 4 years ago when we had such a deep rivalry! I think that the rivalry is now a good thing as my kids always ask “When are we playing Canbury?”! Anyway, the best six yesterday were as good as any other team: Fraser, Josh, Turkay, Will, Chris and Dylan, but every change we made weakened the side somewhat. ” 13 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009
Ibstock 7-a-side Tournament Senior Team finished 4th/8 “We probably had too many players and so a few of them probably went away disappointed that they didn’t get much football, but I tried to do the best for the team. All the boys got on really well and it was a shame you couldn’t have been there.” In the full football season next term – we are playing TCC both at Senior & Junior level, home & away, as well as welcoming them to our Invitation Tournaments in March. 14 Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009

Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009 20 A Team Games Pouya, James, Angus and Marcus shared scoring of points between them and in the end proved too solid for the other teams crucial to the results was the Campbell v Johnson match where the individual brilliance of Dylan L could not live with the team play of Johnson. Inter House Chess Girl’s Section – All tied, equal points… Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009 31 . As ever in the annual Canbury inter-house Chess Tournament there was variety of talent on show. For the first time ever there was a girls’ competition which saw Munuse & Sasha, Aolah and Harriet slog it out on the black and white board. Noble’s Harriet eventually managed to deal with Campbell’s Sasha who put up a spirited fight despite being a complete novice. Harriet looked set for a second victory over Johnson’s Aolah but managed to blow away her winning position as the onset of the end of lunch bell inexplicably panicked her into making moves she had no need to make handing victory to a jubilant Aolah. To ensure that honours in the competition remained entirely even, Munuse showed the benefit of her early years of Cypriot training as she methodically dismantled Aolah’s cautious play to earn 3 points for Campbell.
Inter House Chess 1st Johnson 12 pts, 2nd Campbell 9 pts, 3rd Noble 6 pts. Canbury Sports reports Autumn 2009 32 We look forward to a right royal battle of the sexes in the New Year when Munuse will take on the mighty Pouya who has proved himself to be the dominant force in Canbury Chess over the last few years. This year was no exception as he quickly despatched his countryman Kamiar and “big Josh” (as we know him) to earn a maximum 6 points in the Senior Competition for Johnson. Kamiar’s subsequent victory over Josh gave 3 points to Campbell. The Junior competition proved to be as even-matched as the girls’ with one victory each per house represented by Mazigh, Robert and Alex… photo – action from Round 2 Chess match 2003 (last time cameras were allowed in competition play)
