6 year Old Painting 7 Drawing The above images are all inspired by the artwork of contemporary Japanese pop artist Yoshimoto Nara. Our class looked at several examples of his work and talked about common traits we saw in the pieces. Some of the topics in our discussion included: the size of each subject’s eyes, the shape of their heads (we decided they usually look like beans), How big the heads are in relation to the bodies, the simple background colors in each piece, and whether or not these characters were realistic or cartoon-like. The point of this project was to introduce our 6 year olds to the work of a popular contemporary artist and to learn about and enjoy portraiture without having to get too tied up in the confusing mathematics of facial proportions usually associated with a self-portrait project. Once we’d become familiar with his style, the students set out to create a silly self-portrait (or in some cases, a portrait of someone else) based on Yoshimoto’s work. We used a resist technique with oil pastels and watercolors. The results are fun and colorful, really capture the spirit of each subject. Slide background art by Yoshimoto Nara.
