All Saints Day A religious, cultural tradition in Malta
Around the Maltese Islands, there are a considerable number of churches and chapels dedicated to various Saints. Towns and villages celebrate their patron’s Saint feast during the summer season. The feast of the Assumption of Our Lady in Ghaxaq, a rural village in the south of Malta
On the 1st of November All Saints Day is celebrated throughout the Maltese Islands. This feast is very dear to the Maltese people and it includes religious celebrations in most of the churches and chapels in Malta. Church bells ringing can be heard for a few minutes at noon to celebrate this feast, while in the evening the facades of most churches and chapels are partly illuminated.
On the morrow of this day, another important traditional feast is celebrated; All Souls day. This feast is very dear to the Maltese people and many hear mass for their dearly departed relatives. During the month of November, graves in the cemeteries around the Island are beautifully decorated with flowers and candles, as a sign of respect.
