Around about now in a conference centre not So far away...
enterprisers rocket challenge
A band of intrepid enterprisers was set the challenge in groups, of devising an ingenious rocket contraption, which could be launched after an hour of frenetic construction activity. Each group was given a budget of “4000 Enterpriser Euros”, a universal currency which could be used to purchase rocket motors (essential) and other assorted items useful for rocket construction. The teams would use their enterprising spirit and ingenuity to pencil in the details. The rocket had to be so designed, that when at the peak of its flight, a recovery device such as a “parachute” is deployed to recover the vehicle safely to earth.
Performance Measurements Price Height & Distance Recovery Design & Build Marketing Your rockets will be assessed against the following criteria: How well your team manages your budget, is there any of the budget left at the end of the project? How impressive is your rocket’s performance? How high and how far does it fly? Does your rocket fall to earth with a thud, or does it gracefully glide to the ground with a parachute? How well is your rocket designed and constructed? Is there evidence of good workmanship? How have your team branded and marketed your rocket?
Glass Heavy Metal Sharps Heavy Objects Resource Investigation Paper Cardboard Card Tubes String Bags You will have to scavenge the galaxy conference centre for parts from which you will construct your rocket. Plastic Bottles Cups Stirrers Plastic Cutlery Tin Foil DO NOT USE It is compulsory to purchase a rocket motor, igniter and recovery wadding. Other rocket components are also available from the shop.
Rocket Motor Construction
Launch Controller The ‘Launch Controller’ is provided for you; you do not need to “buy” it. You need to mount the motor in such a way that the “igniter” is easy to access. The rocket is launched electronically
Nose Cone Fins Launch Lug Recovery Device Launch Rod Body Tube Construction The recovery device can take the form of a parachute or a streamer. The recovery device must be coupled to the nose cone and the body.
Enterprise, Entrepreneurship & Co-operation Reaching the stars was surely one of man’s most enterprising endeavours. Space has been given a new context in the 21st Century by entrepreneurs who want to make private space travel a reality. This challenge provides a good opportunity to evaluate your team working skills in the context of an “enterprising” activity.
YOU HAVE 60 MINUTES WORK FAST! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Summary: This is a series of slides created for an activity I run on Cambridge University Judge Business School's Centre for Enterpreneurial Learning 'Enterprisers' course. The activity is a hands on teambuilding activity where the teams work to create model rockets from junk which are then launched. The activity brings together entrepreneurship, teambuilding and enterprise in a fun hands on approach to learning.
