Many teachers use a technique known as a KWL when they introduce a new lesson to students. It serves as a starting point and allows the teacher to find out a little what the students already know about the topic and it helps the teacher to determine what the students are interested in learning more about. Take a minute, jot down some notes on your paper and then lets share.
These might be overly ambitious… who knows First time with this presentation version…. So feedback is appreciated. overview – it is not possible to cover everything. I want to cover the top things you should know to help parent your children to be a safe and responsible users of connected technology… Afterall the nature of technology is change, and some of what we discuss tonight could change tomorrow… chat > text messaging & twitter, myspace > facebook, virus’ > spyware. The goal tonight is to give you an overview of some of the challenges of parenting the tech savvy child, provide some tips and advice, and get you thinking and asking questions… the goal is not to provide an exhaustive presentation of every pitfall. safety – keeping our children safe is still a priority and while I plan on covering some of the basics here, I don’t want to fixate soley on this piece. cyber citizenship – kids are living in an increasingly digital world with its own set of rules, mores and hazzards. I want to start the discussion about what the resposibilities of a cyber citizen might be. facilitate discussion – I want this presentation to be interactive. I want you to ask questions and help me answer them. I’ve planned out some things that I think are important but these may not cover all the topics you are interesting in hearing about. Additionally, I’ve found that parents often have the best ideas for how to deal with certain situations and by sharing, we can all benefit from this knowledge base. I’ve provided a sheet to help encourage discussion and also I’ve planned several activities designed to get you involved. This discussion needs to take place out in the community as well… talk to each other… we need parents to be their own social network. Links are on my delicious page. share resources – I don’t have the time to go into detail about every topic… so, I’ve got a list of resources for you to read at your own leisure.
