4. Subject sampler – includes links to text and multimedia Internet materials (pictures , audio- and video files, different diagrams). Main feature – information perception should be emotional process, it is necessary not only to get information but to express your own point of view and give reasons for or against it. If the students work in groups the topic is divided into several aspects which are first discussed within small groups and then the results of the discussion are presented to the whole class.

Slide 8

Subject sampler Topic: “New areas in Civil Engineering” Resources Text files: http://whatiscivilengineering.csce.ca/civil_new.htm Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLrnJc2Tz44 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNIowx4ttG0 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2735607102442719640&ei=F4tAS2eQyfgGsfTEqwg&q=Space+Structures&hl=ru&view=3# http://www.desivideonetwork.com/view/g89izib20/unbelievable-floating-architectural-structures/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RTu8f9CrvI&feature=related Task 1 Choose one o the areas to prepare a short presentation, including the information about: 1. Nature of work. 2. Job opportunities 3. Career perspectives. 4. Challenges Task 2 Answer the question: Do you think this area will be prospective in Russia? Why? Would you like to work in this area?

Slide 9

5. Webquest – «Интернет поиск» (includes all the components of the previous materials and represents a class project work) All the students study a topic together and after that each group develops a certain aspect of it. Webquest– is a scenario of a project work.

Slide 10

Webquest on the topic: “Web page of Civil Engineering Faculty” Scenario: Your University is planning to update the web page of Civil Engineering Faculty including information on engineering specialities. Work in small groups to discuss the contents and design of the web page of a civil engineering specialty. Subject Areas: different specializations within civil engineering. Your Investigation: A competition has been announced among the students of Civil Engineering Faculty for the best web page devoted to different civil engineering specialities. Take part in the competition: you are going to write the description of your speciality and to design a web page.

Slide 11

Find the information that refers to your specialization. Resources http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_engineering http://www.mcgill.ca/civil/undergrad/areas/ http://whatiscivilengineering.csce.ca/civil_traditional.htm Guided Questions on the contents: 1. How would you define your discipline? 2. What is the main subject of the area? 3. What do engineers in this area do? 4. What knowledge and skills do engineers of the specialty need? 5. What are the applications of the specialty? Guided Questions on the design of the site: 1. How should the information be presented/organized on the page to make it functional and attractive? 2. What visuals should be placed there? 3. What links should the page contain? Web 2.0 Tools Web 2.0 is a set of Web-based software services that encourage users to become more involved in the creation and manipulation of data. Web 2.0 technologies are dubbed “social software” because they allow users to develop Web content collaboratively and they are open to the public.

Slide 14

Blog (https://www.blogger.com/start) A blog (short for weblog) is a personal online journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. A typical blog combines text, images and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. An important feature of a blog is the ability of readers to leave comments in an interactive format.

Slide 15

Three types of blogs used in language teaching A teacher runs a blog to stimulate students’ interest to exploration of web resources and to provide practice in reading authentic materials and listening to native speakers Learners’ blogs are an excellent means of developing writing skills, as they get a genuine and potentially worldwide audience for their work A class blog is created as a result of collaborative efforts of a teacher and an entire class and can be used as a forum to make announcements, post messages, images and links to the materials related to classroom discussions

Slide 16

Wiki (https://plans.pbworks.com/academic/) A wiki is a collaborative web site whose content can be edited by visitors to the site, allowing users to easily create and edit web pages collaboratively Wikis can serve as a knowledge platform for a community where its members can share their knowledge with the group, put up interesting pieces of information, work together, discuss issues, etc.

Slide 17

Possible educational uses of wikis To develop research projects To publish course resources like syllabi and handouts To map concepts, for example for brainstorming and editing a given topic To create a teachers’ knowledge base, enabling them to share reflections and thoughts regarding teaching practices To create a presentation, and students are able to directly comment on and revise the presentation content To teach writing

Slide 18

Reasons for using wikis to teach writing skills Wikis provide low-cost but effective communication and collaboration tool promote the close reading, revision and tracking of preliminary work allow students to be peer reviewed facilitates “writing as a process” ease students into writing for a wider audience

Other Web 2.0 tools Podcast (www.podomatic.com) is a series of digital audio or video files, that is made available for download. Special software application, pod catcher , can automatically identify and retrieve new files associated with the podcast when they are made available, and these files can be stored locally on the user’s computer or other device for offline use.
