Q3W1: x and yinTercepts PreAlgebra
Objective I can find the x and yintercepts of linear equations.
What does INTERCEPT mean? In football, an “interception” happens when the path of the defender crosses the path of the thrown football. In algebra, knowing what “intercept” means will help you identify x and yintercepts.
Vocabulary The xintercept is where the graph crosses the xaxis. (It is where the ycoordinate =0.) The yintercept is where the graph crosses the yaxis. (It is where the xcoordinate =0.)
The X and y intercepts are where the graph crosses each axis yIntercept = (0, 3) xIntercept = (6, 0)
Find the x and yintercepts: x + 2y = 6 xintercept: Plug in 0 for y. x 2(0) = 6 x = 6; (6, 0) yintercept: Plug in 0 for x. 0 + 2y = 12 y = 6; (0, 6)
Let’s graph the X and Y intercepts. (6, 0) (0, 6)
Find the x and yintercepts: 2x + 4y = 8 xintercept: Plug in 0 for y. yintercept: Plug in 0 for x.
Let’s graph it. (0, 2) (4, 0)
Find the x and y intercepts 3x + 6y = 18 5x + 4y = 20
What is the xintercept of 3x – 4y = 24? (3, 0) (8, 0) (0, 4) (0, 6)
What is the yintercept of x + 2y = 8? (1, 0) (8, 0) (0, 2) (0, 4)
What is the yintercept of x = 3? (3, 0) (3, 0) (0, 3) None
