Subtitling workshop for PC

Task: To create a video excerpt with: Japanese subtitles below and English editable subtitles above.

STEP 1 You have a rental DVD, and you want to show it in class with dual English and Japanese subtitles. Create a standalone image file of a DVD that you can store on your hard drive and watch later.

Insert your DVD and make an image file, removing region protection at the same time. Then you can take the video back to the shop and forget about the due date and relax (skip this step if you already have a video file e.g. given to you by a friend). Software required – DVD decrypter, Daemon Tools Time required – Approx. 30 minutes for a two hour movie. Target file - .iso

Remove the DVD from the disc drive. You will not need it. Right click on the Daemon tools icon in the task tray then move mouse icon up to “Virtual CD/DVD-ROM” then to “mount image”. Navigate and select the .iso you created.

Open “my computer” and you will see your virtual DVD disk in its virtual drive. Right click on the DVD and select “power DVD” as your player. Play the video and right click in the screen area – select your primary and secondary subtitles.

Now you have to “rip” the DVD to .avi STEP 2

http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/dvobsub.htm You want to “rip” the subtitle files from the movie. STEP 3 Ripping the Japanese subtitles. Mount the DVD .iso file using Daemon Tools. Go to start / programs/ VobSub/ Vobsub Configure.

Select “Open” and specify the IFO from your movie. Then you'll be asked for a directory where the index file should be saved.

By default all subtitle streams that VobSub can identify will be selected (= be on the right side). If you'd like to remove some, or add other streams you can just select them and press the --> button (to add) and <-- button (to remove) to add and remove respectively. By default Program chain no.1 is selected which is normally the main movie. Do not touch the Vob and Cell section unless you really know what you're doing, make sure Reset time at the first included vob/cell id is checked, then press OK. Then you'll be asked for a directory where the index file should be saved.

After indexing you'll the following screen. You can also define the colors for your subtitles and the transparency. Copy the files out of the folder and into the same folder as the video. Rename to match. Now play the .avi file and note VobSub inserting them automatically into the video. Change vertical placement and color.

STEPS You want text based English subtitle files for your video. STEP 4 Use “Subrip” or download and unpack the text based English .srt file from the internet. Subtitle sites. :

Open the SRT file with notepad to have a quick look at it – check for mistakes – then close without saving . Try opening the movie with Light Alloy. Then select the .srt sub file and check that it plays correctly.

STEPS You want to cut the movie file into a smaller segment. STEP 5 Open “virtual dub mod” and open the .avi file. Find a segment you want to cut and write down the exact times. Select video / compression/ and select DivX and then File/save as (video and audio must be set to “full processing”).

Open “Subtitle Workshop” (desktop) and open (..file, load) your SRT file. Now open your movie file segment. Cut all the subs you don’t need and then save the file as… Make sure you save as an .SRT file as the following screen shows. Editing the English sub files. STEP 6

Synchronizing the .srt English sub file and video segment. Open Subtitle editor again and open the edited .srt file you already made. Now go to video and open the video segment you made. play the movie and write down the timings of the first and last spoken line. Go to “Edit / timings / adjust / adjust subtitles” as shown below.

Input the times for first and last spoken lines and click “adjust”

Try editing the subtitle files so that you create a gap fill activity with some of the text. When you are finished, save your file as an srt file Then select “file / close”

STEPS You want to Edit the Japanese .sub file to match your segment. STEP 7 Go to start / programs/ VobSub/ Vobsub Cutter.

Click on “open” and select either the .idx or .sub graphic based subtitle file that you ripped from the DVD. Input the exact timings you wrote down when you cut the video in Virtual Dub. Make sure “modify time stamps to count from start” is selected. Then click “save as” and re-name the file.

You want to watch your movie segment with the Japanese subtitles below and the English subtitles above. STEP 8 Open your video file by right clicking and select “open with” and then “Light Alloy media player”. You will notice the VobSub plugin automatically loading the graphic subtitle files (.idx/.sub)

Now click on the subtitles button and select your English.srt and your EnglishCloze.srt You should see three subtitle files with your video. Click on this button at the bottom of the player to bring up the subtitle loading screen.

You want to hardcode your subs onto the video segment, and then save the video file. STEP 9 Open Virtual Dub. Go to “File/Open” and open the movie segment. Select “view” and swap output and input video panes. Go to “video/ filters/ add the VobSub filter. Select OK and then open the Japanese subtitle segment created in 7 above. Select “custom colors” and edit the colors and size / placement of your subtitles. To view the result, click OK X 2.

You want to hardcode your subs onto the video segment, and then save the video file. To add the English text subtitles, go again to “video/ filters/ add filter, and select TextSub, then open the English subtitle segment (.srt) created in step 6 above Now click on “Styles” to customize the colors, size and vertical placement of the text. When you’re finished click apply and OK x 3 then return to the main screen.

You want to hardcode your subs onto the video segment, and then save the video file. To save the movie MAKE SURE THAT YOU SELECT “FULL PROCESSING MODE” under “Audio” and “Video” pull down menus. Now select “Video” and “Compression” and select the compression you want for your video. Today lets use DivX 6.8.5 codec and select OK. Select “File/ save as AVI” then choose a name for, and save your video segment with dual subtitles.

You want to change your file to wmv. STEP 10 Why ? Because you can slow it down using wmplayer Open the software AVI&WMV then select “add”. Choose the file you just saved in 9 above, and convert to WMV. Windows media player will allow you to slow the speed you watch the video with no change in the pitch of the audio. You might find this useful.

Ideas for student Tasks

Supply students with a video excerpt and ask them to copy screenshots (control + i in WMP) then to add English captions in a slideshow. These captions could be actual dialogue or just descriptions of what is happening in the video. They could also add audio and if working in groups, take a characters voice.
