SENIORS JUNIORS Yr 11s v TCC (A) Battersea Jan 29th v HSW (A) Roehampton Feb 1st v Tiffin (A) Kingston Dec v Rokeby (H) Cabury Mar 16th
Yr 11 v TCC (A) Fri 29th Jan 2010 Result Canbury 16 TCC 21 Playing what TCC coach Steve Walters indicated was a team that had done little to no basketball, it soon became apparent that TCC were going no pushovers. During the first quarter Canbury were marginally ahead, by the end of the first half and the introduction of players from the bench, the scorers TCC 10, Canbury 8. After the 3rd period scores were 12-12. In the last period of play TCC scored a 3 pointer which proved to be difference in the final score. One of Canbury’s biggest problems was an inability to score. We are so used to the soft boards at school, that we have come to expect any shot reasonably execute to drop meekly into the hoop.

This team talk did some good. Before Half time Canbury were 8-10 down, after the next period the black & reds drew level 12 -12.
Many thanks to those who ran the table – especially to Charlotte who did such a good job as scorer.
Thanks also to Munuse for these excellent photos

Sen v HSW (A) Tue 16th Mar 2010 Canbury 28 HSW B 10 Finally Canbury has begun to get the feel of the quality backboards at the match venues. We arrived early and had some useful lay-up drill, and a 4 v 4 (& DO) which warmed the team up very well. The Hall School had one quite sizeable player who caused us some problems, and a smaller player who had a considerable amount of skill. Canbury got off to a good start though and it took HSW quite a while to get their first points. At half time Canbury led 18-8. The 2nd half was slightly shorter in time – which is perhaps reflected in the score. Canbury scored 5 more baskets whilst HSW could only manage the one – though it was a brilliant dribble into the corner – along the end line and finished with a hook shot.
Sen v HSW (A) Jump ball – at start of match There was no official recorder – so no exact record of who the point scorers were. However, the majority of the point were scored by Dylan L & Turkay S. Most of the remaining players also scored at least once – captain George delivering a magnificent swish from just inside the 3 point line in the 2nd half. This was decent performance – and Canbury learnt a lot from the game – however, there was still a tendency to gravitate towards the ball – not to mark players, and to race out of defence dribbling for all our worth! Next Basketball match for Canbury is the Junior match v Rokeby (H) at the end of term – sadly I haven’t been able to get any other matches for the seniors. DO

Jun v Rokeby (H) Tues Mar 16th 2010 Canbury 14 Rokeby 16 Over the years Canbury has managed to win more of these basketball matches with local prep school rivals Rokeby, than we have lost. However, this was a fast, confident, tall team that Canbury found difficult to subdue – although at times the home side looked very good indeed. It has to be remembered that the Juniors haven’t had a match so far this season. The old days when we were guaranteed to get a game against Stowford are long gone. And despite many efforts I haven’t been able to persuade other schools to play us at football – let alone basketball! Any match experience for the year 9s will have come as part of the team that played Tiffin – see earlier report. Today Canbury certainly had chances – and captain Maz had a heap of shots but little success. Pouya – filling in for missing Dylan Morris also had chances.
In the end it was left to the often wild, but also very capable Kiya to score points. In the 3rd and final quarter he suddenly realised that he could drive into the basket and lay-up a shot if he had the confidence to try. Pouya scored 2 from 2 free throws. Robert at times looked good, Dong Ju defended well. Sadly quite a few of the players would have liked to have been on court longer, but this isn’t very easy to do in a close game . Thanks to players like Christo and Joe who helped with timekeeping and also taking photos. At one point Canbury were at least 6 if not 8 points behind – but a sudden late run of points saw Canbury narrow the gap dramatically – and at one point it looked certain that a deserved draw was possible. Well done though to Rokeby. MVP was Kiya.
Yr 10/9 v Tiffin (A) Dec 2009 Canbury 6 Tiffin 27 This was Tiffin’s Year 9 B team! At least 3 of them were well over 6ft and there seemed to be lots of them! Only to be expected perhaps in a school were there is a basketball match after school most nights of the week. Despite the thrashing this was a useful learning experience for Canbury, we would love to get a regular fixture with Tiffin school – especially as they are such near neighbours.
