Probability By Miss Peake
Explained! Probability- A mathematical way of describing how likely something will happen. Outcome- A result of a probability experiment. Favorable outcome-a result that is desired in a probability experiment.
Say what? We describe probability as a fraction. If we this were a spinner, what is the probability of it landing on 3?... __ 1__ <this is the favorable outcome 5 < this is the total possible outcomes There is only one number 3 on this spinner, out of the five possible numbers.
Spinners again… What is the probability of getting… An even number? 2 ( because you can spin a 2 or a 4) 5 < total possible of numbers you can spin.
Classic Example= Dice! If one die is tossed, What is the probability of getting…. How many sides does one die have? So the possible outcomes would be 6! a 5 ? An even number? A number divisible by 3? _1__ 6 _3_ 6 Because you can roll a 2, 4, or 6 _2_ 6 Because you can roll a 3 or a 6!
Let us practice now! Everybody should participate in the following activity!
