Design and Development Tips

Slide 13

Text Based Instruction Consider the amount of time it will take to read the assigned texts. Reading alone will likely not encourage engagement and higher order thinking. Would you want to read all of the material in your lesson?

Slide 14

Audio and Video “Chunk it.” Consider networking issues. Watching/Listening alone will likely not encourage engagement and higher order thinking.

Slide 15

Online Resources Review the quality and validity of the information. Be mindful of network crashes and dead links. Invite students to suggest new resources that you can add to the course.

Slide 16

Discussion Boards Keep a word processing document for each set of questions along with possible follow-up probes, advice, redirection, etc. that you can copy and paste into the chat. (Serves as lesson plan, saves time, also good strategy for grading and feedback.) Resist the temptation to be the one that immediately responds to every student inquiry, error, etc. Let the learners have the floor.

Slide 17

Online Chats A 45-60 minute engaging chat is often the maximum. Can encourage critical thinking and debate. Develop 3-5 questions and follow-up probes that you can copy and paste into the chat. (Serves as lesson plan, saves time) Resist the temptation to be the one that immediately responds to every student inquiry, error, etc. Let the learners have the floor.

Slide 18

General Tips Be conscientious about copyright and licensing of materials used. Maintain alignment across objectives, instruction, activities and assessment. Be mindful of cognitive load. Use variety. Think about the learner.
