DENGUE FEVER CASES IN CALASIAO January to August 15, 2008

UPDATE A total of 118 suspect cases of Dengue Fever were reported in Calasiao, Pangasinan from January to August 15 this year although there may be other cases not yet reported. The reporting on Dengue Fever cases is dependent on data coming from both government and private hospitals where majority of the cases are managed and treated. This report will serve as a tool for intervention and response actions of the local government unit of Calasiao and the Health Office. There was one death reported in the month of July for case fatality rate of 0.85 %.

INFORMATION Of the 118 Dengue Fever suspect cases reported up to the 15th day of August this year, sixty-four (64) are males and thirty-four (34) are females with the youngest at 5 ½ months old and the oldest at 56. Twenty-three (23) out of the total twenty-four (24) barangays of Calasiao have reported cases. Significant increase for the past week were observed in Barangays San Miguel (which now have the most number of cases), Lasip, (where the lone death due to Dengue Fever came from), Malabago, Bued, Lumbang, Dinalaoan, Talibaew, Nagsaing, Ambuetel, Nalsian, Longos and Songkoy (the last four with no previous cases reported).

The Dengue Fever cases reported from January to August 15 for this year 2008 is several time higher than that of last year covering the same period as well as that of the year 2006 when Calasiao had a total of 110 cases. There were only 6 cases reported last year and 47 cases in 2006 compared to the 118 for this year and this signifies a very sharp increase necessitating continuous proper interventions in the control and preventive activities against Dengue Fever.

The number of reported Dengue Fever suspect cases of 118 is comparable to the 2006 statistics but the total number of one hundred ten (110) then was for the whole year of 2006 while the 118 for this year is up to the month of August only.

This aims to give the teachers the necessary information for them to impart to their students as part of the community effort to control Dengue Fever in Calasiao.

The BHWs of Calasiao, being at the forefront of health service delivery, were given a lecture on Dengue Fever as well as given information materials with emphasis on the important role of early detection of suspect Dengue Fever cases for referral and cleanliness in the fight against Dengue.

RESPONSE ACTIVITIES MONITORING AND EVALUATION The Health Office continuously performed surveillance and monitoring of reported Dengue Fever suspect cases and ocular inspections during epidemiological investigations.

RESPONSE ACTIVITIES MONITORING AND EVALUATION The MHO, with LIGA Pres., AJ Bauzon, gave an update on the Dengue Fever situation in Calasiao during the monthly meeting of the Liga ng mga Barangay. The regular updating of the Dengue fever situation in Calasiao serves as the evaluation of the anti-Dengue Fever activities.
