I gave an informal presentation to a group of Japanese students on my country, Brunei Darussalam. These guys had no idea where Brunei. Rather than say matter-of-factly that Brunei is located on Borneo Island, I felt it better to relate Brunei’s geographical position to a landmark they were all familiar with: Japan. Highlighting Japan I jokingly asked if they knew what that country in red was. From here, Brunei was too small to be visible so I highlighted Southeast Asia instead while telling them that Brunei was in the region of Southeast Asia. This gave them some idea of the general direction of Brunei relative to Japan: South and a little to the West. The next slide was a map of Southeast Asia where context was again applied in the same way, this time using Singapore and Malaysia, arguably two of the more famous Southeast Asian countries, as reference points. Using Malaysia as a reference also brought up one of the more interesting aspects of Brunei: geographically we are wedged into Malaysia. This was naturally brought up during QnA which gave me an opportunity to briefly go over Brunei’s geographical history (in a nutshell, Brunei was really big then the English came and forcefully took our land).
