Demonstration of animation for context using a map of East Asia. If you've spent any amount of time on the web looking at image galleries chances are good that you've stumbled upon the Lightbox technique. Modifying it for presentation purposes I found it helps draw attention to parts of your slide without using a laser pointer. For this particular presentation I was explaining my hypothesis using a diagram. In a nutshell, people with knowledge would have better attitudes and behavior. I needed to explain what knowledge, attitude and behavior meant within the confines of my research and how they were related (following my hypothesis). Splitting it into three separate slide would have removed the link between them which is why I opted for one slide but used a pseudo-lightbox technique to draw attention to the elements that I would be talking about. Actually creating this effect is only slightly more difficult: for each element you want to highlight you need to create a copy above the overlay that lines up exactly on the original element itself. From there it's just applying animations to the appropriate elements according to how you want to present.
