What are fossil fuels? Although dinosaurs come up whenever you hear “fossil” this isn’t dino powered fuels, but they are sort of like that They’re actually formed from the organic remains of prehistoric plants and animals. Coal, oil, and gas are examples of these. This country depends on fossil fuels for various reasons.

Slide 3

Different types of fossil fuels There are many forms of fossil fuels, but the main ones that are used are petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

Slide 4

Coal formation Coal is formed through the fossil remains of a vegetation that grew almost 400 million years ago! When its found it goes through a process called coalification in which it is formed to coal.

Slide 5

Describing different stages of coal formation Coal starts as peat which is a mass of dead and decomposing plant matter and it has already been used as a type of fuel before. Then the peat becomes lignite which is a brownish rock that is almost the same except it has relatively low heating. Lignite is considered the halfway point between peat and coal.

Slide 6

Coal being used as a fossil fuel Coal is used as a fossil fuel by it giving off energy when ignited and its ability to produce energy. An example would be when you use coal on a grill to cook some burgers or when train conductors use coal to make the train go faster.

Slide 7

Oil formation Oil was formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a marine environment before the dinosaurs. For millions of years, the remains of these animals and plants were covered by layers of sand and silt. Heat and pressure from these layers helped the remains turn into what we today call crude oil. The word "petroleum" means "rock oil" or "oil from the earth."

Slide 8

Oil being used as a fossil fuel Oil is used as a fossil fuel as it is in the form of gas which is used in cars so that they can get transported to their locations.

Slide 9

Natural gas formation Natural gas is found deep within the crust of the earth. Millions of years ago animal and plant remains got buried under layers and layers of soil. As time passed the soil matter on top of them got converted into hard rock. All of the matter that was trapped was organic which means that it was as such once alive. The pressure and heat acting on this trapped organic matter gradually changed it into coal, oil and natural gas. The major proportion of what constitutes natural gas is methane.

Slide 10

Natural gas being used as a fossil fuel Natural gas is used to give off heat in stoves which is used to cook things like eggs. It is indeed shocking of just how much fossil fuel is used in our household each day.

Slide 11

What are refineries and why are they important to the production of fossil fuels? Refineries are factory equipment and they are important because they clean the crude oil off the impurities and turn it into gasoline.

Slide 12

The Exxon Valdez The Exxon Valdez oil spill happened in Alaska on March 24, 1989. The Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker, the Bligh reef and it spilled over 10.8 million gallons of crude oil into the ocean. When they tried to clean it all up they used a certain solvent mixture to clean it, but it basically destroyed their eco system

Slide 13

Deep water horizon oil catastrophe Deep under water in the gulf of Mexico a pipe had burst and turning it off was not an option considering how the mechanism is being buried in how much oil is being spilled in the gulf every minute. To try and stop it they put a type of big box so that it could hold all of it, but it was a failure. This made the lives of the fishermen along the gulf hard as they couldn’t get any fishing done as all of the fish were dead.
