THE EMPEROR PENGUIN MY FAVOURITE ANIMAL

DESCRIPTION COLOUR: Emperor penguins are white and black and they’ve got an orange patch on the ears.

SIZE Emperor Penguins are the largest kind of penguins. They are 1.3 metres and they weigh between 20 and 45 kg.

HABITAT These birds live along the coast and the seas of ANTARTICA

DIET Emperor Penguins eat the fish and squid they can catch in the sea

To protect from the coldness they huddle

They breed in the darkness of Antartic winter

They only have one couple in their lifetime.

Female lays the egg but the male puts it on top of his feet and covers it with his abdominal skin Until the chick hatches

After the chick is born the female travels over the ice to the open sea to feed

Two months later the female will return to feed and raise the chick

But if she arrives late the father will abandon the chick to survive

Sometimes a baby will be adopted by another female

Sometimes chick won’t survive

Every year the cycle begins.....
