Types and Causes of Poverty Individual- the circumstances or characteristics of poor people Aggregate- general description of two types of poverty theories Case- these theories summarize that individual poverty is the sum of aggregate poverty Generic-the general explanation that poverty is a set of economically wide problems such as inadequate non-poverty employment opportunities, inadequate overall demand (macro problems, macro policy), low national income(Less Developed Country)

Examples of Individual Poverty Amount of education, skill, experience, intelligence Health, handicaps, age Work orientation, time horizon, culture of poverty Discrimination, together with race, sex, etc

These theorists believe it makes a significant difference if poverty is individually caused or aggregately caused.

What Can You Do About Poverty? Case theorist believe you just address the individual cause of of poverty. Generic theorist believe you improve the quantity and quality of jobs.

Case or Generic: Which Theory is Correct? They are interrelated and hard to determine which theory is correct.

Acute Causes of Poverty Warfare-the material and human destruction that warfare caused resulted in a major development problem, thus dropped the average income. Agricultural cycles-people relying on gardened fruits and vegetables go through cycles that include scarcity. Droughts, flooding, and natural disasters-these disasters destroy crops, animals, and land.

Entrenched Factors Associated with Poverty Colonial history-lack of economic development after colonization Centralization of power-politics/politicians are disproportionate Corruption-leaders benefitting more from monies than society Warfare-receives the scarce resources for the sake of war

Entrenched Factors Associated with Poverty cont.. Environmental degradation-the poor communities rely more on the environment and because it is contaminated in some way it threaten their livelihood Social inequality-bestowed upon people and groups based off social class, race, gender, etc

Addressing the Underlying Causes of Poverty Widespread employment because unemployment amongst the low income groups is an issue. Rid corruption in the government and businesses. Make education and technology more accessible for more people, more so low income and women. Provide universal access to the basic needs and services for humans.
