So - we wanted to present this SINGLE overview of grades and feedback. In the absence of any integration between Banner grades and NOW (Banner remains the official home of all grade data), this would have to be done manually. The obvious home for this programme-level data was the programme learning room in NOW. The Grades tool allows you to set up and populate a so-called grade book. Our grade book looks like this... Student grades are presented in a grid... Student names down here... And module assessments across here. Each column is an assessment.
So at this point, TWO assessments have been marked. As you can see, this presents a quick overview of student progress and grades. From here, you can... Click a student's name to see ALL grades and feedback for ALL assessments for that particular student... OR... Click an assessment to see ALL student grades and feedback for ALL students for that particular assessment.
When you want to mark an assignment, you can... Enter GENERIC feedback HERE. These are general comments, for the whole cohort to see.
And (this is just the lower half of the same screen)... Enter grades for each student HERE, and individual feedback HERE (clicking this brings up a box to type into).
The STUDENT VIEW shows much the same data but obviously, only the student's own. So - here is the GRADE, here is the GRADE BAND, colour-coded, and here, under ‘Individual Comments’, are the student's INDIVIDUAL feedback comments for that assessment, and here, under ‘Overall Comments’, are GENERIC comments that the whole cohort get to see.
In the spirit of evidence-based practice, we treated this project as a PILOT. Evaluation was planned and built-in from the beginning. This investigates the staff AND student experience, and does so BEFORE, DURING and AFTER the pilot. This will help us to say whether the pilot was successful, what the benefits and issues were, and what the prospects are for rolling the approach out more widely.
