What have you learned over the summer? My example: Snapchat. Any news you’d like to share or questions for the group?

Slide 5

From the 1980s to the present day teachers have been using various computers and applications to enhance student learning. Students around the world have exceeded teacher expectations and have learned to “game” the system. Contained within the box are nine questions that tech integration specialists can use to help teachers focus themselves on maximizing the use of technology...yet...some teachers are still stuck in the 90s despite new ideas, tools, and devices.

Slide 6

Keep in mind that we ask teachers to make use of technology in the teacher evaluation.

Slide 7

I first learned about the framework at an ISTE webinar. If you have an ISTE membership you can view the entire webinar for free. We will be going through Liz’s explanation about how she started using technology with students back in 1996 and how she came to look into the research of the purposeful integration of technology in content areas. We will then learn about the research the are markers for using technology to engage students in the course content. Slide 8

We will be looking at a video clip of a teacher using technology to support students in the objective of students understanding the different characteristics of Biomes. For each question, Liz suggests you replace the words in the framework, for example, “focus on the assignment/activity/goals” with the learning objectives...so...The technology allows students to focus on understanding the different characteristics of biomes with less distraction. I added two questions, first think about: did this seem like meaningful work then could this be accomplished without technology. Remember, teachers have 180 in their subject area to work on the content. We are trying to decide whether or not the use of technology gave students an exceptional, strong, average, or low connection of the use of technology to the learning objective. Finally, the last question asks that you share which video you analyzed. Click the Biomes Movies radio button.

We watched and analyzed this video and then looked at the ratings the group shared: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1t42cTyIVS_1u_vJNBPX3OLfi_y2ZqRfbHOOVQwp2yvU/edit?usp=sharing

Reminder that the school technology plan is due May 1, 2018. I will go over the details with the new tech integration specialists on November 29th. I can travel to schools to work with you if you need more support.

Slide 11

Since we no longer use Rubicon Atlas, you have to go to the Catholic Schools Office website to view the skills by grade level for the technology curriculum map.

Slide 12

Slide 13

You can go directly to this link.

Slide 18

I tried to set everyone up for the Digest email.

Flip Grid can be used for free. You can title the question with the grade level. It is $65 a year for multiple boards. It is a great way to get feedback from students whether it is a reflection, listening for fluency in another language or for English Language Learners, or having students create little tutorials in preparation for a test or quiz. I will be using this over the course of the year. The first message will give you the ability to match a face with someone you might meet at one of the tech workshops so you can remember their name and where they are from.

I signed up the entire Archdiocese of Newark for the 2017 Speak Up survey. It is a great way to help yourself prepare and finalize the school technology plan. It is free. I spoke with all the principals last week and Dr. Dames sent a note to the principals via First Class. More details will follow.
