Bay Mills Veteran Memorial Plaque reads This Monument, designed by Stephen T. Landis, was dedicated on September 13, 1996 In honor of all Veterans of the Bay Mills Indian Community. The three figures represent our Past, Present and Future Veterans.
Anderson, Jaclyn Rae (LeBlanc) STAFF SGT US AIR FORCE Daughter of Bay Mills member Lawrence LeBlanc Sr. News article dated 3-3-08 says she is stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho as a Staff Sgt. Of the366th Maintenance Group. “We will go out after the initial Alarm Black, after everyone has taken cover, and set the simulations off,” said Staff Sgt. Jaclyn Anderson, 366th MXG GA EET member. “After the simulations go off, we may also lay out unexploded ordinance for them to be able to find while they are completing their Post-Attack reconnaissance sweeps of the perimeter of their buildings.” “There are usually two or three duds a day,” said Sgt Anderson. When there are duds we have to call EOD to come out and take care of the situation. They could easily start a fire or even blow up as we are approaching them, so we take every precaution we can.”

When three fellow soldiers were severely wounded and pinned down by enemy fire during an ambush, Specialist Four Cameron with complete disregard for his personal safety, crawled forward through the heavy enemy fire to help his comrades. Establishing a makeshift defensive perimeter Specialist Four Cameron pulled the wounded men back to a safe area for medical treatment and further evacuation. His courageous, unselfish actions were instrumental in saving the lives of the wounded soldiers and helped his company successfully blunt the enemy assault. Great Britain and Canada in our wartime capabilities and won Readiness Challenge IV.
Bay Mills Veteran Parish, Donald Walter US NAVY CHIEF CORPSMAN On March 18, 1968 he accompanied a battalion of Marines on an assault on the village of Vinh Quan Yhuong. In the first moments of the engagement the platoon suffered numerous casualties, including a corpsman. He had to duck down behind a hedgerow to escape the gunfire and continued crawling towards his fallen comrades. Throughout the entire 12 hour battle, he continued to expose himself to hostile fire as he put himself in harms way to provide his comrades with medial aid and to help move them to safety. Four days later he volunteered to accompany the first platoon on a patrol northeast of Dong Ha. As they crossed an open rice paddy he recalled hearing the sound of AK-47 gunfire. They were ambushed and had nowhere to go. They had to continue moving forward. He had to continually advance into the oncoming fire to assist the fallen soldiers to a relatively safe area. After successfully rescuing three Marines he went back across the rice paddy and was struck by gunfire. The bullet entered his backside just below the waist breaking his pelvis along the way and lodging in his hip. He came to with a Marine only one good arm and one good leg dragging him across the rice paddy by the back of his jacket. Moments later air support was called in and rid the area of enemy combatants. There were close to 200 in our company when we began to cross and the next day there were 100. He was immediately flown to the hospital ship USS Sanctuary where he received the Purple Heart. At the award ceremony he was given the Silver Star, Third highest honor in the armed services. His fondest memory is performing a X-ray on President Johnson at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda.

Everything was top secret there. When they escorted someone through headquarters they needed to make sure that the person did not turn their head to either side but straight ahead. He needed to carry a pistol at all times. His job was to see that unauthorized personnel didn’t enter or leave the area. He checked passes, identification and any packages. Native American’s in WWI by Wanda Perron “Put in your history books the Indian’s part in the World War. Tell how the Indian fought for a country of which he was not a citizen, for a flag to which he had no claim, and for a people that have treated him unjustly. We ask this chief, to keep sacred the memory of our people.” This was told to the Mayor of Chicago on December 1, 1927 by a member of the Grand Council Fire of American Indians. What he was referring to was the Native American involvement in WWI. Though volunteerism was the highest ratio of any ethnic group that participated and they were given the most dangerous assignments, still it had not been recorded in our history books. of 17,000 Native American’s that served in WWI 59% of them volunteered, many before the Selective Service Act of May 1917 was even implemented. A great number crossed the border into Canada to enlist prior to the United States entering the conflict on April 6, 1917. All this and the majority of them were not even considered citizens of this country at the time. They fought, they said, for the same reason their ancestors had fought before them, to defend their homeland. Many Bay Mills members also volunteered and participated in WWI including but not limited to: William Lawrence LeBlanc, Simon O. Teeple, Angus Teeple, Frank Teeple WIA, George Teeple, Daniel Henry Teeple, Thomas “Teddy Bear” Marshall, Alvin Fish, Alfred S. Fish, Samuel Waishkey, William Waishkey, Henry Waishkey and Thomas Marshall. Not long after WWI started, a peculiar thing happened. Native American soldiers became involved in so many heroic acts on the battlefield that they became stereotyped as having almost “superhuman” qualities. This belief resulted in their being chosen for many more difficult and dangerous missions such a scouts, snipers and runners. A runner would “run” the news along the lines rather than use radios for fear of interception by the enemy. One example of “being chosen” happened when the commanding officer of the 167th infantry Regiment chose a Native American soldier as a scout for nighttime patrol. He was chosen on each consecutive night until on the 21st night he was killed. Some believed that this stereotyping might also have been the reason so many volunteered, to live up to these ideals. Whether they were chosen or whether they volunteered, the result was that many died. 5% of Native American soldiers died compared to 1% American soldiers. Another Bay Mills member that served in WWI was 25-year-old Alfred Justin LeBlanc son of Arthur and Agnes (Miron) LeBlanc. He was a Private in Co. M, 56th Infantry. He was one of the first groups of men to ship out of Chippewa County to boot camp at Camp Custer in Battle Creek, Michigan. He arrived to active duty in France on August 3, 1918. Three months later on November 10th a runner was needed to pass the news along the lines that the war was over. At 8:45 am Alfred (his family was told that he volunteered) left with the news. His body was found at 4 pm in a shell hole having been hit with machine gun fire not far from his destination. 2 ½ years later a Sault newspaper article dated June 13, 1921 stated that the body of Pvt. Alfred J. LeBlanc would be arriving in Brimley tomorrow by train. He was buried in the Mission Hill Cemetery and is listed as the last recorded death of WWI. History books today still do not tell of how Native American men volunteered and died during WWI. They do not tell how they died for a country very dear to them though previously not even permitted citizenship of that country. However, here in Bay Mills and on other reservations around the country they are not forgotten and are still being honored. Bay Mills host a Veteran’s Pow Wow every June where Grand Entry is comprised of veterans who are currently serving or have served in the Armed Forces. The names of all Veteran’s are announced as far back as can be remembered. This past June’s Pow Wow a booklet was printed with many of our veteran’s photos and information and it is hoped to add more to it next year. Also, across from the Old Indian burial Ground is a statue honoring all of our veteran’s past, present and future. If we have missed any veteran’s who served or are serving please let the History Department know at 906-248-8458 or 906-248-8459 or at history@baymills.org. Also, if you have not yet gotten your photo and information in of a family member who served, please do so ASAP.
