Reconstructing the Story Luke’s story begins in Nazareth Matthew’s story is set in Bethlehem, Joseph’s probable hometown Arranged marriage After becoming pregnant, Mary went to visit Elizabeth and stayed with her for three months – Ein Karem (4 miles from Bethlehem)

Slide 5

Joseph would have come to see her there and it would have been there that Joseph received the news from Mary. Back to Bethlehem Receives his message in a dream – recalling another Joseph with famous dreams Goes back to Mary, they go to Nazareth, are married, and remain there until they are forced to return to Bethlehem for the census. Reconstructing the Story

Slide 6

Joseph Would seem to be a relatively minor character Not a lot is known, so traditions grew around him. Catholic and Orthodox traditions say he was an old man (one source says he was 93 at the time of the marriage) Protestant traditions say he was a young man (probably 15-17 yrs old) “Tekton” – carpenter or stonemason

Slide 7

Joseph Receives the News They are already practically married He must not have believed her at first “But he was a righteous man…” He has a dream He returns to Mary and they are officially married

Slide 8

Contrast of Joseph and Herod

Slide 9

Joseph’s Life speaking to ours. . . Quiet faithfulness Not about getting noticed or recognized The “worst moments of our lives” can be the very moments when God is doing the most amazing things
