My students are very young, so I do not use technology extremely often. I get nervous doing too much with technology because I do not know what parents feel comfortable with their kids doing. Having preschool students, there is not always room for use of technology in the classroom. Tech is not totally accesible where I am. Poor wifi connection, limited laptops no smartboard, sign out projectors;in which may not have time to do or be functionable limited "Not enough time foor tecnology use.Not enough resources" limited resources not enough technology resources in the room I do not have technology in my classroom for student use. limited access Computer is old and sometimes there is difficulty when connecting to the SMART BOARD weak internet service when all students on at same time when the technology isnt working SafeSharetv No smartboard in the room. Seating and sharing. no smartboard and having to use old projectors that dont work. Ipads / chromebooks are shared. Sometimes they are not charged or another class is using them. What browser do you use most often? Google Chrome 17 Internet Explorer 4 Safari 1 What search engine do you use most often? Google 19 YouTube 2 Bing 1 Yahoo 1

We will use the Triple E Framework to evaluate the way in which technology was integrated into this fifth grade math lesson about elapsed time. [Review Triple E Framework’s nine rubric entries and Engagement, Enhancement, and Extending Learning]

Type in key words – water cycle

Slide 7

Within the 12,900,000 entries may be a blog post about the news cycle and a lot of water in the weather forecast. We want to just have information about the water cycle.

Slide 8

Phrase searching is accomplished by putting quotation marks around two or more words that must appear together in the text of the website.

Slide 9

A large number of “hits” have disappeared. Pages that did not have water and cycle next to each other on the page have disappeared.

Slide 10

The hypen (or minus sign) says take away results that have this word. So in this example we are asking for web pages that have the words water and cycle next to each other AND THEN only show those pages that also do not have the word Wikipedia on it. I often remove results that have pinterest.

Slide 12

.com – commercial – anyone can create this .edu – higher education – only universities and colleges .org – non-profit organizations (be careful people with a harmful focus can be .orgs too) .mil – military .gov – government (federal, state, local) .es – two-character country code – in this case Espana (Spain) .k12.nj.us – public elementary school

Slide 13

Show me web pages with the word vocabulario and the phrase los colores on any website in Spain.

Slide 14

You may find web pages you would not normally.

Slide 15

Why else would you use country codes? Learn how other nations perspectives are on the news or world event. Use this site to find country codes.

Slide 16

Phrase prayer service AND school on any page on the USCCB.org website

Slide 17

You can sometimes find more interesting pages by trimming back the URL to the nearest / on the left

Slide 18

This is called trimming the URL

Slide 19

You can keep trimming back

Slide 20

Until you get to the main website

Slide 22

You might sometimes get access is forbidden. Just keep trimming back the URL until you either get to the main home page or find more interesting content.

Slide 23

It took four trims to find something on the NCEA website.

Slide 24

When you look at the results you will see some start with PDF others are just straight web pages and do not.

Slide 25

Using the advanced search we can find just those PDFs that have the phrase prayer service AND school on the USCCB.org website.

Slide 26

Now we only have to search through 54 results.

Slide 27

Try this on your own.

Slide 28

This is where we can use that domain k12.nj.us – you can type any two-character state code in the site or domain.

Slide 29

We started with over 12 million results and are down to 554. They could be handouts, lesson plans, curriculum guides…but they are all PDFs with the phrase water cycle.

Slide 30

I haven’t given you a hint for this…any guesses on how to do this?

Slide 31

The asterisk means I don’t care what is here so it will show you results from all 50 states. We have more than 554 because it now includes all states.

Slide 32

We can have two phrases. In this case water cycle AND grade 3

Slide 33

There is also an advanced search for PowerPoints.

Slide 34

Try this.

Slide 35

How did you do it? Type it in the search box or use the advanced search form?

Slide 36

Try this

Slide 37

Remember the hyphen says do not include the word event

Slide 38

The advanced search will give you the opportunity to only find pages last updates in the past day, week, month, or year. There is no typed short cut for this you need the advanced search form.

Slide 39

Students need these options to search smarter. You may want to show them how to limit the domain to Newsela or Tween Tribune.

Slide 40

You can search for Shockwave Flash. This used to be my favorite search but under the newest operating systems Chrome on Windows and Mac will not play SWF files. They are good for animations and games.

Slide 42

On Firefox you will have to say you trust it first.

Slide 43

On Internet Explorer the SWF files will just play.

Slide 46

Let’s close with Wolfram Alpha. It is a computational knowledge engine that searches only factual databases – not web pages. It is outstanding for looking up information about states, famous people, science, math, music, and more. Always try some fun searches first so students can see how it works then bring up the meat of the learning. It does not have ads.
