First Sunday of Lent

Slide 3

Matthew 28:18-20 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. 19 So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.”

Slide 5

Sometimes people who talk about Jesus a lot get picked on and made fun of. …. Sometimes… behind their backs.

Slide 6

I’ve mocked. I’ve been mocked. Even Paul got mocked.

Slide 7

11 Since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to help people accept the truth about us. God knows what we really are, and I hope that in your hearts you know, too. 12 We are not trying to prove ourselves to you again, but we are telling you about ourselves so you will be proud of us. Then you will have an answer for those who are proud about things that can be seen rather than what is in the heart.

Slide 8

13 If we are out of our minds, it is for God. If we have our right minds, it is for you. 14 The love of Christ controls us, because we know that One died for all, so all have died. 15 Christ died for all so that those who live would not continue to live for themselves. He died for them and was raised from the dead so that they would live for him.

Slide 9

16 From this time on we do not think of anyone as the world does. In the past we thought of Christ as the world thinks, but we no longer think of him in that way. 17 If anyone belongs to Christ, there is a new creation. The old things have gone; everything is made new!

Slide 10

18 All this is from God. Through Christ, God made peace between us and himself, and God gave us the work of telling everyone about the peace we can have with him. 19 God was in Christ, making peace between the world and himself. In Christ, God did not hold the world guilty of its sins. And he gave us this message of peace.

Slide 11

20 So we have been sent to speak for Christ. It is as if God is calling to you through us. We speak for Christ when we beg you to be at peace with God. 21 Christ had no sin, but God made him become sin so that in Christ we could become right with God.

Why do we Chicken out?

Slide 13

1. I'm afraid of being rejected. 2. I'm afraid of what my friends will think. 3. I don't know enough. 4. I'm afraid of losing my friends and relatives. Why??? William Fay, Share Jesus Without Fear

Slide 14

Here’s mine: … I’m afraid that I will not be successful. …

Slide 15

“Success is sharing your faith and living your life for Jesus Christ. It has nothing whatsoever to do with bringing anyone to the Lord. It has everything to do with obedience.” William Fay

Slide 16

Remember what Jesus said? He said go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you.

Slide 17

And you’re not in it alone! … I will be with you always, even until the end of this age. …

Slide 18

Live it. Listen. Say it!

Slide 19

1 Peter 3:15-16 New Century Version (NCV) 15 But respect Christ as the holy Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to answer everyone who asks you to explain about the hope you have, 16 but answer in a gentle way and with respect. Keep a clear conscience so that those who speak evil of your good life in Christ will be made ashamed.

Slide 20

During Lent, we enter into a season of preparation, self-reflection and repentance when we seek to literally “turn around” and realign our lives and focus toward God. Lent

Slide 21

It is a time to give up things as well as take on new life-giving practices, helping us rid ourselves of distractions and our own selfish desires. By doing so, we seek to live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. Lent

Slide 22

Ready, Set, Go!
