Sources of the Need to “Forgive God” Great Pain (ours or others) Misunderstanding of God Disagreement with God Circumstances that make no earthly sense Church or Christian hurt you No one else to blame God’s seeming absence

Slide 5

You’re in Good Company Moses, Joshua Job - “My complaint is with God, not with people.” (Job 21:4) Jeremiah, Jonah, others Jesus "My God, my God. Why have You forsaken me!" (Matthew 27:46)

Slide 6

Story of Job - Loses everything His wife said to him, “Are you still trying to maintain your integrity? Curse God and die.” But Job replied, “You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.

Slide 7

His friends are with him When they saw Job from a distance, they scarcely recognized him. Wailing loudly, they tore their robes and threw dust into the air over their heads to show their grief. Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.

Principles from Job’s approach to God

Slide 9

1. Be real about the issues. . . Let the day of my birth be erased,     and the night I was conceived. Let that day be turned to darkness.     Let it be lost even to God on high,     and let no light shine on it. Job 3:3-4

Slide 10

2. Address the issues directly with God - Job 10 Pile your troubles on GOD's shoulders-- he'll carry your load, he'll help you out. He'll never let good people topple into ruin. Psalm 55:22, The Message

Slide 11

3. Address God with faith Be silent now and leave me alone.     Let me speak, and I will face the consequences. Yes, I will take my life in my hands     and say what I really think. God might kill me, but I have no other hope.     I am going to argue my case with him. But this is what will save me—I am not godless.     If I were, I could not stand before him. 13:13-16

Slide 12

4. Wait for God to show up “I had only heard about you before,     but now I have seen you with my own eyes” Job 42:5

The Breakthrough Rediscovering who God really is

Slide 14

God Loves You With An Everlasting Love! Jeremiah 31:3 Long ago the LORD said to Israel: "I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself. Who is God?

Slide 15

God is searching for You Luke 15 The Lost Sheep The Lost Coin The Lost Son

Slide 16

God Loves You Even When You Don't Love Or Serve Him. Romans 5:8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 2 Timothy 2:13 If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.

Slide 17

God Is For You, Not Against You; Your Ally, Not Your Enemy; Your Helper, Not Your Destroyer. Romans 8:32, He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all--how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Slide 18

God Has Specific Plans For You. What He Plans For You Is Good, Not Bad! Jeremiah 29:11-13, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, ..."

Slide 19

Some Closing Thoughts Accept that there are things you will never understand Read the Bible (Psalms, Job, others) Pray consistently Direct the energy toward God, not away from God
