Slide 1

I tell a story that big sister Sue leaves herself logged in to Facebook and her little sister is having friends over. They want to use the computer to play a game and find her sister logged into a website (many of the students recognize it as a Facebook page). Since it is an interactive whiteboard, I have the words hidden behind the monitor and the students pull them out one at a time and the students vote as to whether it is (A) a good idea or (B) a bad idea. I think you could do this with two piece of flipchart paper taped to the wall and have the six ideas (in the red blocks) on sheets of paper that could be taped to either the page labeled as Good Idea or Bad Idea. You can give the students green and red construction paper to hold up for good idea and bad idea instead of using a voting device.

The next three prompts on slides 2-4 come from the Be CyberSmart lesson http://cybersmartcurriculum.org/cyberbullying/lessons/4-5/group_think/ Group Think. The students took turns writing their thoughts in the yellow box. Again, you can have students write answers on a black board, white board, or flipchart paper.

Slide 5

We had a student who was supposedly teaching other students to search for “bad words” in Google. I asked the students what word might a student type with the word language that might be considered inappropriate. Then we discussed why.

Slide 6

Finally, this is another chart that is from the Be CyberSmart Group Think worksheet. Again, you can have students either brainstorm or pull the words out of a hat. I had the four options hidden behind the orange rectangle. They dragged the words they pulled out on to the yellow rectangle. After voting (again you can use the red and green construction paper or something else) we moved the words to the side we felt was most appropriate. The Group Think worksheets contain a bystanders pledge. I did not do that.
