Geography has 5 basic themes This makes studying geography easier to understand LOCATION PLACE REGION HUMAN- ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION

LOCATION Location can be found 2 ways Absolute Location: a specific description of where a place is by latitude and longitude. Relative Location: a general description of where a place is by using directions or places as points of reference “Where is it? Absolute Location: 46 ⁰ N, 105⁰ E is where Mongolia is exactly located. Relative Location: North of China, South of Russia is where Mongolia is located.

PLACE Place When you want to know what a location is like, you are using the theme of place. Physical features Cultures Climates, etc… “What is it like there?” Winters in Mongolia can be very cold, as low as -22⁰ F

REGION Region We group places & locations by unifying similarities such as Human characteristics Physical features “What is similar?” A large part of Mongolia has a desert like steppe region called Daurian

MOVEMENT Movement This theme of geography is how things get from place to place such as Ideas People Products Services “How do we get it there?” In Mongolia public transportation is usually a crowded microbus

HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION H.E.I. This theme of geography is how people interact with and change the environment. Land Water Climate Plants & Animals “How did we change? or How did we change it?” These factories in Mongolia are called the 2 Black Dragons because they pollute the air so much with deadly black toxins.
