Google Apps & Service Learning September 2010
That question is about to be answered! You will need two Internet windows or tabs open: One for Edublogs (log in) One for Google Apps (log in) You are going to create a form (embedded into Edublogs) that will keep a running track of all the stuff you do (in Google Apps). “How do students document their community service hours?”
Go to Google Docs. Create a new Form. Title it “Service Form.” Uncheck these boxes: First, you will create a Form
Slides with this symbol contain a movie. Since the movies would not upload with the PowerPoint, you should refer to the movies on the web page when you get to these slides.
Now you will add questions to your form See movie #1
Oops? Mess up? See movie #2
Now add more questions My name (the service provider Date(s) of service Who benefitted from the service (the beneficiary)? Hours invested in this project? Description of service How documented Contact person and info See movie #3 and movie #4
Click the Theme button at the top. Choose one that will go with your Edublog theme. Add a theme
Form is done! Now you will embed it in Edublogs!
Make a new page by clicking here.
Title it “Service Form” See movie #5
Two more things need to be added to this page below the form: A flowchart to understand the categories of service. The reflection questions. The flowchart is an image that can be uploaded from the student server (Service folder) or from the bottom of this page. This button uploads images. The image is called “Service Flowchart.” Almost done!
Finally, the Reflection Questions need to be posted at the bottom of the page. The questions are posted in a Word doc (where you found the flowchart). Open them, select all, and copy. Paste the text in the Visual box below the image. Last thing!
It should look like this:
Each time a student wants to document an activity, he/she will log in to Edublogs and fill out the form on the Service Form page and submit it. Then he/she will create a post on the homepage about that service, summarizing the event and answering at least 3 of the 5 reflection questions (they can copy/paste and fill in the answers). Documentation will be uploaded to the post. Post will be tagged “service.” How it will work
Periodically, a teacher will ask students to SHARE their Google Apps service form with them. The teacher will then verify that the hours submitted contain the corresponding posts with reflection and documentation. This can be done through advisory, through teams (as part of the portfolio process), or by individual teachers (as a grade in a class—standards to be determine by that teacher). How teachers will check it
The End… …or maybe a new beginning?
