2011 Individual Artist Grant Program New Works Fellowships Application Workshop

Purpose of IAG Program New Works Fellowship Grants Which may be either Emerging Artist or Established Artist Fellowships. IAG encourages the creation of new works and will give priority to applications that focus on the presentation of new works. Through the Individual Artist Grant Program, Houston Arts Alliance aims to: Recognize significant Houston artists and their contributions to the nonprofit arts sector and the community-at-large. Support, encourage and nourish an environment for the growth and development of Houston artists. Stimulate a greater public awareness of the arts in general and of artists in particular.
Your Award Guidelines page 5 Your grant is distributed in 4 installments. Before a payment is sent to you, you are required to complete the following: Payment 1: an executed signed copy of the Grant Agreement, venue confirmation, approved proof of residency and a signed IRS W9 form. (April 2011) Payment 2: Progress Report Form (June 2011) Payment 3: Progress Report Form (September 2011) Payment 4: A final report- due within 45 days after the completion of the grant term (February 2012) If the Final Report is not submitted within 30 days of the deadline the final payment will be forfeited.
General Eligibility Guidelines page 6 Applicants who have received an HAA Individual Artist Grant within the past three years (July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2010) are ineligible. Applicants must have lived in the City of Houston for 24 consecutive months prior to the deadline. Proof of residency is required. Must be an artist (or team of artists) who is actively engaged in the creation of art. Must be a U.S citizen or have resident status Proposed use of grant funds must demonstrate a benefit to the tourism/convention and hotel industry. Refer to page 6 of the guidelines for more eligibility.
Application Review Process Guidelines page 7 Staff Review Reviews for completeness, eligibility & residency. Prepare documents for Peer Panel Review. Peer Panel Review Objective and knowledgeable local & regional artists, arts professionals, arts educators and community members, evaluate each application. A blind review process Review based on guidelines. Use a 100 point system Committee and Board Approval Review, finalize and approve funding recommendations of the Peer Panel.
Funding Source Guidelines page 7 Houston Arts Alliance receives funding from the City of Houston through the Hotel Occupancy Tax (H.O.T.) of which a portion funds the IAG program. Because the Individual Artist Grant Program is funded with Hotel Occupancy Tax funds, the funded activities must directly benefit tourism and the convention and hotel industry.
What Will Not Be Funded Guidelines page 9 Applications from artists who do not meet the City of Houston residency requirement. Projects already funded by HAA. Capital purchases of permanent or not expendable equipment. Programs or Projects are completed and have already taken place. Expenses associated with events happenings outside the City of Houston. Purchasing of food, beverages or catering expenses. Projects that do NOT have a public performance. Refer to page 9 of the guidelines for more.

Grant Categories Guidelines page 10 Emerging Artists $3000 grant to support artists who have actively and continually pursued their profession for less than 3 years in their discipline. Established Artists $7500 grant to support experienced artists with more than 3 years of professional experience in their discipline. To determine which category is right for you: Base it on artistic accomplishments documented on your resume and in your artistic samples submitted.
Selection Process & Criteria Guidelines page 11 Applications are reviewed using the following criteria weighted on a 100-point rating scale: Artistic Merit (maximum of 60 points) Impact on tourism (maximum of 25 points) Feasibility (maximum of 15 points) It is suggested to address these specific criteria when answering the narrative questions in your application.
Public Presentation of Work Guidelines page 11 Artists are required to present their work in a public venue before the end of the term. A signed venue confirmation is required from each artist within the first quarter. (March 2011) Artists are encouraged to identify a high visibility, public project site (venue), for the presentation of the new works.
Required Supplemental Materials Guidelines page 12-14 Proof of residency Artist Resume or CV Artist Statement (one page limit) Artist bio (500 words max) A description sheet corresponding to work samples. Work samples See page 13-14 for specific requirements based on your discipline NEW THIS YEAR: Work samples may be housed on a website, please provide a link in place of a CD or DVD. Optional: Published material about your work, no more than 3 (ex: press review, articles, etc.) Items will be copied and distributed to the panel members prior to their meeting. Due: December 14, 2010 by 5:00 p.m.
eGrant Guidelines page 15 To begin, select a Grant Type from the drop-down menu and click the “Create New Application” button. You should perform this step only once. In eGrant you are not required to complete the application in one sitting, you can save the application and return to finish it later. Due: December 10, 2010 by 5:00 p.m.

Social networking – Facebook, MySpace etc. Emails to regional and local peers/colleagues in your discipline. Flyers posted in highly visible locations Work with your venue- make sure your event is featured on their webpage, newsletters, mailings etc.
Helpful Information Approximately 20-25 artists are funded each round from 65-75 applications received. HAA urges artists to post their work samples online. If you do not have your own website consider using these free websites: www.blogger.com; www.youtube.com; http://wordpress.com; https://sites.google.com/ and http://www.myblogsite.com. In you application include instructions on how to view/find your work on the website you provide. Supplemental Materials: All Materials should be single sided on 8 ½ x 11 white paper Do not bind materials. Submit only what is requested. Submit copies of work samples. No originals, books, DVD’s or CD’s.
Helpful Information Continued Blind review process- do not put your name in the text of your supplemental materials. (ie. Biography, artist statement, resume, or narratives. ) We strongly recommend that you “cut-and-paste” from a word-processing program to check for grammatical and spelling errors and word count. Most correspondence with HAA staff is through e-mail. Grantees are required to attend an orientation in March, 2011. All grantees are required to credit the City of Houston and HAA in all publicity and printed materials using a very specific credit line: “[Artist Name] is a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant Award. This grant is funded by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance.” Recipients are responsible for any tax declarations on the grant awards as applicable.
