We asked ourselves the following questions: Is there a place where very specific information is readily available? Is there a resource for those of us who do not have the time to be overwhelmed with too much information? Where can I go to get the information I need so that I can use it and then move on? Real Solutions is Born We modeled our program based on the preceding scenario. We wanted to create something that provided people with quick and real solutions to any number of daily situations that could arise. Brought to You by Your Local PCC 10
Real Solutions: Open a Postal Permit Perhaps one of the most basic tasks, yet many of us have already had permits set up for us when we were hired. We decided to tackle this most basic of postal tasks. Brought to You by Your Local PCC 11
Theme Song We have a very talented singer and musician that just happens to work for the Postal Service on our board. A quick shout out to postal employee, Lisa Landone for the concept and for writing the music and playing all the instruments. Likewise, we need to acknowledge her friend and singer, Lorrie Wesoly. Cost for professional singer and musician - $0.00 Brought to You by Your Local PCC 12
Applications Microsoft Windows Moviemaker ProShow Gold Adobe Media Decoder CamStudio Total Cost for these programs - $0.00 Experience needed to run these applications - Minimal Brought to You by Your Local PCC 13
A Video Sandwich Our clips all have the same 20-second introduction with the theme song and free random pictures from Microsoft Clip Art. The ending also plays the theme song and has the same scrolling credits. The middle section will change depending on the topic. Using this formula two-thirds of the clips are completed when we begin. Technique 1: Screen Shot (no camera or actor needed) Easiest clip to produce No need to worry about lighting, camera, background noise, etc… Many free screen shot applications can be downloaded A microphone is required Brought to You by Your Local PCC 15

Post Production It took some time to put our “video sandwich” together The preceding clip took longer than expected as we struggled getting the look and feel we wanted. Now that we have the beginning and ending, our clips are very easy to put together. Brought to You by Your Local PCC 17
Benefits of Web Sites The web site is always on Members know where to go for information Relatively inexpensive Many PCC’s already have web sites, and those that don’t have usually expressed interest in starting a web site Brought to You by Your Local PCC 18
Problems of Posting Clips on Web Sites Smaller PCC’s (and many large PCC’s) pay for basic web services, so the amount of bandwidth available is limited Video clips take up large amounts of bandwidth Your web site provider will gladly accommodate your need for more bandwidth…but it’ll cost you Brought to You by Your Local PCC 19
YouTube to the Rescue Most people are familiar with YouTube and other hosting sites Create a free account Upload completed clips Link your clip to your PCC web site Cost to PCC - $0.00 Brought to You by Your Local PCC 20

Technique 2: Live Shot A tripod helps…if not available, you need a steady hand. Lighting must be considered. Background noise must be considered. Editing required…a rare individual who nails it on the first shot. Brought to You by Your Local PCC 22

Technique 3: Editing Tricks Once you get comfortable with editing, it’s time to spice it up. The next clip has a live actor and uses some editing tricks. Actor/sound/lighting remain considerations. More time needed to edit. Brought to You by Your Local PCC 24

Statement 1: It’s expensive to produce video clips. False Much of the software is either inexpensive or free. 26 Brought to You by Your Local PCC
Statement 2: You need a lot of experience to produce video clips. False The people on our board had no experience with video production techniques. We are all mail people who now find ourselves pitching different ideas each month. It’s actually been quite fun and lead to livelier board meetings. 27 Brought to You by Your Local PCC
Statement 3: Placing video clips on our web site will increase the annual cost for our web site. True In most cases this is true, however, there are “work-around” solutions. Sites such as YouTube will host your clip for free. You can then link to the YouTube site off of your PCC web site. 28 Brought to You by Your Local PCC
