Markham Mutts

Priorities to improve Bio-Diversity should be based on facts relevant to Markham Reserve and Gardiners Creek.

Biodiversity is the equilibrium reached when the following major factors come into balance.

Appropriate habitat
Available food
Predators
Water Quality and Pollution
Presence of species at location or adjoining area

Bio-Diversity Corridor - Gardiners Creek
Flora, Fauna and Aquatic life

Bio-Diversity Corridor - Gardiners Creek

Action plan: Create Habitat, Remove Predators

Manage Foxes and Cats in this area !

Banning off lead dogs will solve none of the above problems
They don’t eat Fauna
They don’t destroy Plants
They don’t eat the Frogs

If you want MORE:
Frogs Build a pond
Bats Plant some Fig trees
Lizards Build a rockery
Owls Build some nesting boxes
Peregrine Falcons Build a nesting platform
on the HV power poles Black fish Get rid of the Carp
Water Rats Protect the banks from Erosion

Habitat - Management

Bare Earth Poisoning does not protect the park from erosion or improve habitat.

Slide 4

Habitat - Management

Simple inclined banks don’t catch rainfall when it comes. They also allow poisons to run off into the creek.

Slide 5

Habitat - Management

Stop Creek banks eroding so water rats can survive.

Water Quality

Install Litter Traps but then manage them.
(installed in Markham Reserve about a year ago)

Predators – Foxes

Foxes in Boroondara
Did you know that there are as many as 14 foxes per square kilometre in parts of Boroondara? Our river and creek environments, hollow logs, rock piles and even under houses, sheds, or large blackberry or weed patches make ideal habitats for foxes. But in an urban environment like Boroondara’s, traditional methods of fox control such as shooting, poisoning and trapping are not appropriate. What are the best ways of controlling foxes in our City?

Predators - Foxes

Council’s own website highlights that a mature fox can kill up to 3000 native animals each year.

Great solutions from Boroondara

More formal fencing to separate dogs and bikes from play areas.

Water Quality

Stop pumping water out of the creek during dry periods:
Warm Water and Low Flow lead to Algal Blooms and Low Dissolved Oxygen levels. These factors cause the majority of Fish Deaths i.e. even more than pollution. Refer EPA report 1998-2007

Malvern Valley Golf Course Pumping Station
Always used in times of drought.
This photo taken last week shows down-stream flow has stopped completely.
