7 Restore to normal life I think criminals should be made apologise to their victims because this would mean that they are more likely to reform their behaviour. They may not do it again as they now see that there is a price to pay for their crime. Also if they apologise to their victims they are paying in some way for their crime which is retribution although they should have to do more than just apologise. It might also help the victim and society to cope with the crime as they can put a human face to their experience.

7 List the problems from previous home work (should be easy). Try to make sure you mention issues to society not just to the individual. For 8 marks make four points and explain them well. (i) I agree because Capital Punishment gives no chance for a person to reform. I also think it is wrong because there are cases (like in the Derek Bentley case) where mistakes are made and these can’t be undone. I also think it is wrong for a country to break a law that they say is important like “Do not murder” some Christians would agree because they say that you should love your neighbour and Capital Punishment is not a loving thing to do to someone.

7 (ii) Others might say that Capital Punishment can be justified as it protects society from the criminal. They can’t commit the crime anymore if they are dead. It is also a deterrent as others may not commit a crime if they think they will be killed for it. You could also argue that it is retribution as the criminal pays for the crime they have committed. Some Christians believe that Capital Punishment is ok. They think this because it says in the Old Testament that the death penalty is ok. They might also say that the needs of society are more important than the individual. In the past the Church used Capital Punishments such as burning at th3 stake for heretics.

8 An act against the will of God. Agree because… God is the only one who really knows why a person does what they do. God can make sure the punishment is fair and that justice is done. Disagree because. Not everyone believes in God and is important for people to see the punishment so that they feel that justice is done. So others must judge people on earth to send them to prison. Also some criminals need to be put in prison for our protection it’s no good leaving that to God as that will bring religion into the courts which will make it hard for it to be fair.

Jesus came to save lives not destroy them. Jesus said forgive and turn the other cheek. God sees us all as pure and sacred so would not want us killed Most Christian Churches agree that Capital Punishment is wrong. Statements in the Bible particularly the Old Testament, are in favour of the death penalty. The Church in the past has put people to death… …like Joan of Arc. Thomas Aquinas said the needs of society are more important than an individual in some cases.

8 (d) Your view (from previous homework) + Religious Reasons Islam Muslims think that alcohol (Khamr) is an intoxicant and comes from the Devil it is completely forbidden (Haram) . Some Christians are against Alcohol as it causes lots of social problems (domestic violence, alcoholism etc.) Some say it’s ok as Jesus turned water into wine and they often have wine in a church service called communion.
