Animal Cells By Dylan Hubel December 2nd 2010 Science 8 Block D2
Parts of an Animal Cell The animal cell has 12 main parts to it. - The Mitochondrion - The Vacuole - The Cell Membrane - The Lysosomes - The Golgi Body - The Cytoplasm - The Ribosomes - The Nuclear Membrane - The Endoplasmic Reticulum - The Chromosome - The Nucleus And the Nucleolus.
Descriptions
Nucleus The large, oval structure in the center of the cell. It also houses the chromosomes and nucleolus. The Nucleus is basically the control center of the cell. It regulates the activities that go on.
Nucleolus The Nucleolus is the small dark spot in the nucleus. The Nucleolus Simply Creates Ribosomes
Cytoplasm The Cytoplasm is a jelly like substance that resides in between the nucleus and cell membrane. The Cytoplasm contains organelles, water, and other life supporting materials.
Endoplasmic Reticulum The Endoplasmic Reticulum is a system of clear tubes that spreads throughout the entire cell. The Endoplasmic Reticulum has one job, and that’s to transport materials throughout the cell.
Cell Membrane The Cell Membrane is a thin layer that separates the interior of the cell from its surroundings. The Cell Membrane controls movement of materials coming into and going out of the cell.
Ribosome The Ribosome is a small, grainlike body that is made of RNA. It’s either located attached to the endoplasmic reticulum, or is floating freely in cytoplasm. The Ribosome creates proteins
Chromosome One of a set of structures, located in the nucleus made of DNA and protein. The Chromosome passes on traits to new cells, and stores information for building proteins.
Lysosome The Lysosome is a small round sac that contains digestive enzymes Breaks down food, old cell parts, and dead, obsolete, or injured cells.
Mitochondrion The Mitochondrion is a rod shaped organelle found in the cytoplasm. The “Powerhouse” of the cell. This is where food molecules are broken down and converted to energy rich molecules
Vacuole The Vacuole is a large, round, water-filled sac in the cytoplasm. The Vacuole stores food, water and wastes.
