Design.

Yr 9

Slide 2

What is design? All men and women are designers. All that we do, almost all the time, is design, for design is basic to all human activity. The planning and patterning of any act toward a desired, foreseeable end constitutes the design process. Any attempt to separate design, to make it a thing-by-itself, works counter to the fact that design is the primary underlying matrix of life. Design is composing an epic poem, executing a mural, painting a master-piece, writing a concerto. But design is also cleaning and reorganizing a desk drawer, pulling an impacted tooth, baking an apple pie, choosing sides for a football game, and educating a child...

Slide 3

Why?

In simple terms, we design to make things.
All kind of things, products, buildings, clothes, motor vehicles, logo’s etc.

We design to make new things…..
….and also to improve on old things.

Slide 4

Building design and Architecture

Slide 5

Slide 20

FASHION DESIGN.

Fashion design is very demanding on designers.
The designers have to create new looks for the season, months in advance of clothes being sold on the high street.

Slide 21

STREETWISE

Steetwise fashion is perhaps the most popular.
This is because these are clothes that we use most often.

Slide 22

BOARD WEAR

Board fashion which derives from the culture of skaters, surfers and snowboarders is getting increasingly popular.

Why is this?

Slide 23

Black no’s

Black is a very popular choice for the streetwise public.
Dark colored clothes look smart, and can be worn often.

So then!

Use all this information wisely.
Perhaps you have seen something that you would like to design yourself.
Maybe you have thought of a design that would siut a group project.
Remember, good design needs good research. So research your proposed idea thoroughly before comiting yourself.

Slide 51

These are the most popular themes for your design.

Product design.
Fashion design.
Building design (architecture).

Furniture design.
Garden design.

Slide 52

Slide 54

Make a start!

Begin by jotting down any ideas that come into your head.
These ideas don’t have to be all on the same theme.
Then for each idea, think how you could develop it, try to have a few different ways which you would like to develop your ideas and write these down.

Slide 55

Then begin to make sketches for each of your proposed ideas, using pencil in your sketchbooks.
Eventually you will have to choose your favorite idea and develop this for your main design.
You will need to produce your design using drawings from different veiwpoints.
These are called elevations.

Slide 56

Front elevation

Side elevation

Rear elevation

Top elevation

Slide 57

Elevation drawing.

What ever you are designing. By producing drawings from different view-points you are giving the viewer the best possible chance to see what you intend to make or do.
Your design sheet should be complete with at least 4 different viewpoints of your design. These are called elevations.
