The WEB is Not The Only Source… So much information… so poorly organized Hard to judge the quality of the information or who it came from Teachers need to know how the internet and web work so that they can more accurately supervise students using these online resources.

Google NoteBook Google Notebook is a free service from Google that is an interactive scratch pad for any visited web pages, offering to collect web findings within the browser window. Your clips are stored online with sharing and collaboration available.

Share Your Google NoteBook Sharing functions permit a teacher to make public notebooks visible to students based on a list of users. You can make your notebook collaborative or not, depending on the lesson you are teaching.

Other Google Stuff Word Processing Presentation Software Full collaboration of documents with students you select.

Online Forms For Free Google Spreadsheets offer free forms. You create the form, mail it to your people. When they use the form the results are stored in a spreadsheet that you can access privately or share with a selected group or anyone.

Calendars to Share Google Calendars can also be shared or not. Google has a sync feature that is automated. Mine syncs with my Outlook calendar. That means anywhere I can get on the web I can read and update my calendar… I can also share due dates, special dates etc with my students.

Backup your pictures online Buy prints Or let you friends download full resolution pictures for free Really share your photos. Including maps of where they are taken.

STOP! You need to stop and examine those old assignments. How long does it take with Google? Are you asking students to do something that for them is trivial? We can easily move to HOTS!

Collaboration… Is truly more than a buzz word….

So How Should Teachers Take Advantage of WEB 2.0?

First Get A Google Account Gmail is free as are all the Google apps, but you need a unifying account and Gmail is perfect. Free storage and smart kids coming up with new stuff all the time. Worth the price… Wait… its free.

Use A BLOG to Communicate… Students, and parents, expect to find information online that is up to date and easy to use.

BTW: Wisconsin’s “New Model Academic Standards” Social Studies was published in 1998. Wisconsin’s “Instructional Technology Literacy Standards” Published in 1998. Obviously developed before then 1998.

Other Free WIKIS There are other free sites, just do a Google Search for “Free WIKI” I’ve used this one and it works. Others work too I’m sure, but life is too short to search for the perfect WIKI.

What Should You Do With a WIKI? Allow students to write, revise and submit assignments in the wiki. A WIKI allows for group authoring and revising. Allows students to brainstorm online. Students can read and comment on their peer’s work.

With Online Tools…. You can use them anywhere you can get online. You can share them with anyone else online. They are protected against loss or destruction. The cost of the software and storage is zero!

Students and Teachers Can access documents, lessons, presentations etc from anywhere there is a connection. No access at home? Use a pen drive to take the documents home and use a free office suite at home. Or they can do their homework at McDonalds.
