Don’t Miss the Point… …and don’t let Web 2.0 stand in your way…
Web 2.0 – Is for all of us… Web 2.0 is cross-platform, in fact it is platform-less. Web 2.0 is two way communications at its most powerful Web 2.0 is not just for your kids and your students
A lot of smart people have missed the point…
Chester Carlson (1906-1968) Ever heard of “Carbon Paper?” It is because of Chester that your students haven’t. He invented photocopying. He combined the existing techniques of electrostatic printing and photography. In 1938
1938!!!
Not Needed in Industry! IBM, RCA, GE, the US Army – Not interested! In 1948 one company, Haloid, was. Carlson received about $150,000,000 from his invention, donating more than 2/3 to United Negro College Fund and other civil rights and Buddhist organizations1
Haloid Changed Their Name To XeroX in 1961
Almost all laser printer and copiers today use Chester’s process…
The Wright Brothers… Could not get leading industrialists to accept their invention. The military thought it was a needless expense. If the lord meant us to fly…. Well, you know the rest.
Western Union The Telegraph Company
Had a chance to by Bell’s Patent for $100,000 but they considered it a toy!
Two years later it was worth over $25 Million
Didn’t Western Union Understand The Communications Business?
Lessons For Educators Seek to understand new technologies. Don’t be afraid to try things. Use new technology…
Just How Have Things Changed? Information has made people more powerful. Collaboration is not just a buzz word but the way people work. Students and their parents know how to connect.
Why do we need Web 2.0?
Because we are now teaching Student 2.0!
…students have been stuck in classrooms, behind desks, being told how and what to learn. …when students were expected to become widgets for the vast machine of industry, this model of education was highly effective. …we have now entered a new age: an age where thinking is more important than knowing, where thoughts out-do the facts. Borders are melting away; project teams collaborate across the globe and intelligence is being continually redefined.
The world’s information is at our fingertips and anybody can publish their thoughts for virtually no cost. From: Sean “The Bass Player” http://students2oh.org/
Everywhere, we see changes: with how business operates, how people interact and how success is accomplished. There is unfortunately one place that remains unchanged, the place that could benefit most from the changes we see today... the classroom. More from Sean2
Sean Says… We are seeing the birth of a new kind of student He calls this Student 2.0 Parallels the transitions of the web Web 1.0 – Web 2.0 – Web 3.0
Web 1.0 – Static Web 2.0 – Interactive Web 3.0 – Database Driven
We can do new and better things with Web 2.0 technology…. Not Just The Old Stuff Faster….
So How Should one Use Web 2.0 in Teaching?
Research of Course… Will Never Be The Same….
The WEB is Not The Only Source… So much information… so poorly organized Hard to judge the quality of the information or who it came from Teachers need to know how the internet and web work so that they can more accurately supervise students using these online resources.
Google NoteBook Google Notebook is a free service from Google that is an interactive scratch pad for any visited web pages, offering to collect web findings within the browser window. Your clips are stored online with sharing and collaboration available.
Share Your Google NoteBook Sharing functions permit a teacher to make public notebooks visible to students based on a list of users. You can make your notebook collaborative or not, depending on the lesson you are teaching.
Other Google Stuff Word Processing Presentation Software Full collaboration of documents with students you select.
Online Forms For Free Google Spreadsheets offer free forms. You create the form, mail it to your people. When they use the form the results are stored in a spreadsheet that you can access privately or share with a selected group or anyone.
Calendars to Share Google Calendars can also be shared or not. Google has a sync feature that is automated. Mine syncs with my Outlook calendar. That means anywhere I can get on the web I can read and update my calendar… I can also share due dates, special dates etc with my students.
Backup your pictures online Buy prints Or let you friends download full resolution pictures for free Really share your photos. Including maps of where they are taken.
STOP! You need to stop and examine those old assignments. How long does it take with Google? Are you asking students to do something that for them is trivial? We can easily move to HOTS!
Collaboration… Is truly more than a buzz word….
Because Social Networking is Here to Stay! Get With It!
I’m not on myspace… but your students are. They use the social networking to make connections, share assignments and answers … You should too!
So How Should Teachers Take Advantage of WEB 2.0?
First Get A Google Account Gmail is free as are all the Google apps, but you need a unifying account and Gmail is perfect. Free storage and smart kids coming up with new stuff all the time. Worth the price… Wait… its free.
Use A BLOG to Communicate… Students, and parents, expect to find information online that is up to date and easy to use.
BTW: Wisconsin’s “New Model Academic Standards” Social Studies was published in 1998. Wisconsin’s “Instructional Technology Literacy Standards” Published in 1998. Obviously developed before then 1998.
Web Logs or Blogs Were Invented in 1999
Blogs Are Free and Easy http://www.blogger.com
Create a Free Blog I suggest you use Blogger, www.blogger.com Easy to set up. Get a gmail account gmail.google.com so you can use Google Docs too. There are dozens of free blog sites that probably work just as well as blogger.
There’s a button below to click
Click here to go on…. You did it!
See what it looks like? http://teachingtheblog.blogspot.com/ It won’t be permanent, I’ll leave it there for a few days. Then I’ll delete it. Even free resources should be conserved!
Do It Every Day! A blog is a great start at Web 2.0 – it is the web page for the rest of us. Do it right away, and tell the your students and their parents about it. Keep it current so they will read it and know what is going on in your class.
Blogs are designed for one to many communication. You create content, others read it and marvel at your brilliance. Readers may comment but the content is yours.
My Blog http://johnsklarsoffice.blogspot.com * There are links there to all that I am talking about…. You will also find a copy of this presentation. I use this blog for everything so scroll down and see what else I’m doing.
Now is the Time to Collaborate! …and teach our students how to collaborate.
Imagine a WebSite… at which all users could contribute. available simultaneously in dozens of languages. No control of the accuracy of the information. where thousands go each day for information.
Imagine a WebSite… About 2.5 million articles organized and cross referenced. Over 75,000 active contributors. Where “Visitors do not need specialized qualifications to contribute, since their primary role is to write articles that cover existing knowledge;” 3
WIKI
The Site is Wikipedia Have you used it? Your students have!
You should create a WIKI if you… are tired of asking for help with web sites? want to increase student engagement ? are you tired of web solutions that are complicated and hard to use? want to make homework easier to collect? want to see your students collaborate? Want to work in any place with an internet connection?
Making a WIKI takes minutes…
I Suggest www.pbWIKI.com Free Secure Password protected Mostly ad free Costs nothing Has no charge Skip paying for the premium version of this product. It is not different enough to be worth the added price. I say, use the free one.
Other Free WIKIS There are other free sites, just do a Google Search for “Free WIKI” I’ve used this one and it works. Others work too I’m sure, but life is too short to search for the perfect WIKI.
What Should You Do With a WIKI? Allow students to write, revise and submit assignments in the wiki. A WIKI allows for group authoring and revising. Allows students to brainstorm online. Students can read and comment on their peer’s work.
Other Web 2.0 Tools Google Docs SoHo ThinkFree
With Online Tools…. You can use them anywhere you can get online. You can share them with anyone else online. They are protected against loss or destruction. The cost of the software and storage is zero!
Students and Teachers Can access documents, lessons, presentations etc from anywhere there is a connection. No access at home? Use a pen drive to take the documents home and use a free office suite at home. Or they can do their homework at McDonalds.
WriteBoard I created a WriteBoard for you. These are free and easy to use. Please try it. http://writeboard.com/026f352e5be14ca0d The password is WCSS. Why not keep me informed as to how you are using these tools.
Cut your load by 20% No job Harder than teaching. No job more rewarding. Devote one day a week to a content – rich, standards based lesson from “Thinkfinity”. Try their student interactive lessons. From the home page click on Lesson Plan Index.
