Introduction

Many companies in different types of industry apply methods such as Lean Manufacturing, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Six Sigma or Total Quality Management (TQM) to realize and maintain the high standards their customer demand. The 5S program is the key to their success. The 5S method is a structured program to implement workplace organization and standardization. It motivates people, improves safety (product safety as well as working conditions), efficiency and productivity.

What are the Five S's? In Japanese - Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu, & Shitsuke.

Sort - the first step in making things cleaned up and organized
Set In Order - organize, identify and arrange everything in a work area
Shine - regular cleaning and maintenance
Standardize - make it easy to maintain - simplify and standardize
Sustain -maintaining what has been accomplished
