Most famous book: During his
years in South Africa, Gandhi
was inspired by the Bhagavad
Gita and in the books of Tolstoy,
particularly in the Kingdom of
God is in you. In the 1880's
Tolstoy had become deeply to
the cause of Christian anarchism.
Gandhi led another book by
this author called Letter to Indian
writing in 1908, in response
to Indian nationalists who
supported violence.

Career and social politics: Gandhi is loyal
and friendly towards the British, during the
rebellion of the Zulu. This does not prevent it
from launching, in September this year, his
first campaign of nonviolent resistance in defense
of the Indians of South Africa. By harsh struggles,
always conducted with the method of non-violent
resistance, Gandhi gets equal rights for Indian
immigrants.
Family: He was the son of Karamchand Gandhi,
a prime minister and his family local era of caste
vaisya (trader). Her mother, Putlibai, the fourth
wife of his father. For the thirteen years married,

Key event: other humiliations suffered by
not giving accommodation in several hotels

people of color daily in South Africa. And in this
country, having suffered racism, prejudice and
injustice began to question the social situation of

his contract expired, was prepared to return to India.
At the farewell party in his honor in Durban, look at a
newspaper reported that a law was being developed in
the Legislative Assembly of Natal, which would deny
the vote to Indians. Postpuso his return to India and was

the assembly of Natal and the British government trying to
prevent such a law was passed. While not achieved its

Awards: Gandhi was never awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize, but was nominated five times
between 1937 and 1948. Decades later, however,
the Committee which administers the Nobel laureate
said the unfairness of this omission, which he
attributed to nationalist sentiment divided denied
that such a prize to Gandhi.
The Government of India gives an award to
which called the Peace Prize to Mahatma Gandhi.
Nelson Mandela, the South African leader, is among
those who received the prize.
death: On January 30, 1948, when Gandhi
was heading to a meeting to pray, was assassinated in
Birla Bhavan (Birla House) in New Delhi, at 78 years of
age by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu radical groups apparently
linked to ultra-rightist India, as was the Hahasabha Hindu
party, who accused him of weakening the new government
in his insistence that he was paid the money promised to
Pakistan. Gods and his co-conspirator Narayan Apte were
tried and sentenced to death. His execution took place on
November 15, 1949.
Celebration: On January 30 they celebrate the Day
School of Nonviolence and Peace (DENIP) in memory of this
man. In countries with school calendars themselves in the
southern hemisphere this day is commemorated on March 30.
