This brief presentation shares 9 effective test-taking strategies that promote higher scores on any test.
What does the FCAT measure?
Describe the general format/layout of the FCAT.
Are you penalized for guessing or leaving items blank? How might a strategy like QAR help you master multiple-choice items? Which strategies will you employ to get the greatest number of points possible on items that require a written response?
Have you ever taken a full-length SAT or ACT practice test which includes items at the same level of rigor? Allow some time to actually practice under real-time conditions prior to actually taking the test.
Be sure to read ALL visual cues as they usually help to aid comprehension or add meaning to otherwise ‘dull’ texts. This includes visual aids such as graphic organizers, pictures, and text features (e.g. headings, bold print, italicized words).
Students who actively make connections are far more likely to stay engaged and build comprehension as they work to understand what they read.
This can apply to more heavily weighted portions of the test (that provide more opportunities for a higher score) or selectivity in reading by learning to separate extraneous details from important details.
Problem solving skills are good but the ability to formulate problems are better! These skills require us not only to be problem solvers but also to begin thinking about the kinds of challenges that we might face under real-time testing conditions. This test taking strategy teaches students to make predictions and begin thinking-through problematic areas BEFORE they arise.
Anxiety and fear will prevent you from performing at your best. Be sure to get plenty of rest and do not eat foods that will prevent you from being alert and keeping a clear consciousness.
