In their first battle, the regiment was to show their mettle. “Bonnie Dundee” had routed the Royalist forces at Killiecrankie
He then marched south with an army of 5000 Jacobites
The 1200 strong Cameronians were ordered to occupy Dunkeld and hold.

They fought with great valour and
eventually the Highlanders broke and withdrew from the field.
They are said to have declared that “they could fight with men not devils”.

The regiment was raised by Thomas Graham later Lord Lynedoch, who was to become Wellington’s second-in-command during the
peninsular war.

His wife was such a stunning beauty Gainsborough painted her at least four times
She suffered from ill health
and eventually died abroad

On returning home with the coffin through revolutionary France it was desecrated by an unruly mob of half drunken men, who searched the corpse and stole her jewellery, even taking the gold in her teeth.
This incident profoundly shocked Graham that when France declared war on Great Britain he raised the regiment.

In 1857 they were in India where at the relief of Lucknow, one of the most famous operations in the Indian Mutiny, the regiment won a further six Victoria Crosses.
After service in 1879 in South Africa during the Zulu Wars they were sent again to India and it was whilst there, in 1881, they received the news that they were to be given the new title of......

Disbandment
On the 14th of May 1968, where they were raised 279 years earlier, The Cameronians chose to disband rather than amalgamate
