ExamOnline has Unique Support for Hand Drawn Sketches Example question : Draw a generic V-life-cycle model for a major project. On-screen drawing tools too constrained, candidates would need to be familiar with them, etc So: Candidates hand draw diagrams + sketches We have devised a scheme to associate the paper drawings with the electronic candidate responses during marking

Slide 10

The Process Hand Drawn Sketches Invigilator provides candidates with pre-printed sheets of paper, with 2 ID numbers to be filled in Candidates click on a button in the interface to insert a sketch, and the system tells them the ID numbers to write on the paper – highly redundant The ID numbers are also embedded in the candidate’s answer, cannot be edited/deleted, and is subsequently visible to the human marker

The Examiners’ experience of on-screen marking ExamOnline Reading the answers is much easier than when having to decipher poor handwriting. Summary: Pen-and-paper examinations are becoming increasingly anachronistic. In an age when everyone uses a word processor, how valid are hand written examinations? Could you still write an essay on paper ? What if it was really high stakes ? What if a promotion, or a pay rise depended on it ? Which would you choose, pen and paper, or word processor ? No surprise then that organisations are increasingly moving towards delivering essay style examinations online. The problem is that when it comes to delivering essay and extended answer style examinations, most online testing systems are barely fit for purpose, being geared towards the delivery of multiple choice questions, automated marking, and item banking. This is an area where ExamOnline has a distinct advantage. ExamOnline has been specifically designed to support the e-assessment of extended answer and essay examinations. The fault tolerance developed to support these kinds of tests also comes into play in all other ExamOnline tests (multiple choice, etc). And this fault tolerance and automatic re-synchronisation is all achieved through a standard web browser. There is no requirement to install any software at all on the client computer.
