Introduce Autology by explaining the investment the school has made in this independent learning tool Talk about the fact that Autology is a massive database of text books, URLs and the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica Stress that it is information and it will pattern match so therefore the more information (the better the pattern) that you can give it the better the returned information as it has a clearer pattern of text to match to The program must not be treated like Google with only key word searches it must have a statement of information to search effectively
Explain the analogy of using Autology to an iceberg. 80% of an iceberg is below the water and we can compare this to the knowledge we do not yet know The 20% above the water is what we do know At every point of using Autology the program is built to raise that hidden 80% out of the water thus giving the user more knowledge they will know and understand
Autology may be accessed anywhere you have access to a PC linked to the internet Users must always login with a username and password The web address is very important and must be used exactly otherwise certain of the functions may not work properly There is no www. in the URL and the name of the school appears before .autologyworl.co.uk
Logging into Autology is very easy Once a user has received their username and password all they need to do is go to the web address Click on the login link Enter the personal login details Even if you try and enter a search it will also prompt the user to login
Autology works in two ways the first mentioned is searching in Autology or pulling information down from the Autology website Flash demonstrations may be found on the www.autology.info website (Click on slide hyperlink) Click on Autology Search on the info site or click on the hyerlink on the slide for a demonstration of how to carry out an Autology Search SAMPLE SEARCHES TO DEMONSTRATE BASIC AS OPPOSED TO AUTOLOGY SEARCH KS3 Year 7 History Basic Search: medieval churches Autology Search: medieval kings wanted the Catholic Church to help keep the country peaceful GCSE English Shakespearean Study on “The Merchant of Venice” Basic Search: Merchant of Venice Shylock Autology Search: Shylock is the archetypal villain of the piece GCE Physical Education – Fitness Training Basic Search: issues fitness training Autology search: in order to improve athletic performance it is necessary to improve some aspects of fitness
The most interesting way that Autology can work is through it pushing information to you while you are working Home use requires the installation of the AWE Infomate or push software Link for downloading the software can be found in the scroll down menu at the top of the search page after logging in then download and run the software This will be a silent installation and you will not see anything happening until there is a window to thankyou for installing the AWE Infomate To use it: Login to Autology as normal and then click on the software link in your Start and Programs menu Enter you Autology login details again Go to the autology.info site for more information or click on The Autology Push hyperlink on the screen *Examples of Push Searches Ensure all text is typed exactly as below Year 7 Science – Electrical Circuits All electrical circuits have a cell or battery which provides electric current. Year 8 Science – Sedimentary Rock Formation Sedimentary rocks are made from small grains of rock which have been weathered from rock surfaces. Year 9 Science – Variety and Inheritance The new varieties of organisms can be bred by taking advantage of variation. Year 10 and 11 GCSE Science – Ammonia Production The Haber Process. Ammonia is an alkaline gas made from nitrogen and hydrogen. A Level Biology – Gas Exchange in Humans At the end of the bronchioles are air sacs called alveoli each is folded to form a set of interconnecting spaces.
Active Folders are another very useful function in Autology You can enter a query or search when you create a folder and it will work away in the background finding information for you whenever you are logged into Autology For an flash demonstration go to the autology.info site or click on the Active Folders hyperlink on the screen
Autology is a highly secure website which allows only one user to login using the same details at a time If more than one user tries to login with the same login details it will knock the previous user out It is important for users to change their password to something that they remember Passwords if forgotten may be reset by the Autology School Administrator
Changing a password is very easy Simply login using your personal Autology login details Click on your name where it appears at the top of the screen Complete the boxes with the new password details Save the new password Always a good idea to change a password at the end of a session when you are not going to use the system for a while so that it can update
Always use Autology personal login details for the website and the AWE Infomate Don’t use just key words use detailed information to search The program pattern matches so a rich pattern of text returns a rich return Autology may be used anywhere users have access to a PC to search for information Autology AWE Infomate software to push information and create active folders will not work on a Mac Searching for information in Autology will work in all types of web browsers.
An Introduction to Autology Dale Lukritz Strategic Learning Manager dalek@autology.org
Pattern Matching Technology Database filled with hundreds of text books and thousands of URLs Will pattern match what you are working with on screen and then allow you to pull the information down from the internet or for it to be pushed to you Analyses context as well as key words Natural language queries preferred – cannot treat it like Google The more detailed the pattern the more detailed the information provided
