George Woodman Teng Hoi Conservation Organization Not another talk about climate change
Cut to the chase HK’s target reduction of GHG emissions is based on going nuclear. Surely we can do better than that. Potential to reduce consumption is enormous but little has bitten so far with the public. We have developed practical, educational and FUN activities linked to carbon emissions. The activities fit very nicely with the new local school curriculum. We can deliver the activities, but we need a little help.
We think something different is needed Interest people talking about carbon Action changes made in habits Results millions of tonnes of CO2 saved
An Inspiration: KGV school The deal (from the Principal): ‘save more than 10% of the electricity bill and you can keep the savings’. Electricity bill ~HK$2m, savings are ~HK$2-300k per year Average 14% savings – around HK$700k total since start.
Community Carbon offsetting Pay cash to offset emissions Reduce carbon that would have been emitted by changing habits of students
Cap and Trade Programme: a way to encourage energy saving in schools SCHOOL’S ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION
Footprints of Hong Kong:1 The Carbon footprint of a school with a HK$4.5m (= US$580k) electricity bill is 1% of HKSAR land area. (This figure only considers electricity consumption and excludes other contributions to the footprint). The carbon footprint is the area of forested land needed to absorb the CO2.
Early findings from launch of programme What’s that? Errrr… But how…? ?????
Carbon games Arguments, threats, sharp points, theft, trickery. At least it’s memorable.
Carbon trading is a major political issue SYDNEY MORNING HERALD Jun’10 [Rudd] said that, unlike Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who has a different view on the subject "depending on what day of the week you happen to ask", the government has always accepted the science of climate change. "It is clear to me and always has been, for years and years and years, that climate change is happening," Mr Rudd told Fairfax Radio on Tuesday. "That is why I ratified Kyoto. The Liberals were opposed to ratifying Kyoto." He blamed the Liberal Party for the delay to the ETS. http://www.smh.com.au/environment/climate-change/climate-will-be-election-issue--rudd-20100605-xlrc.html BRISBANE TIMES Dec ‘09 The Rudd Government has failed to explain its far-reaching emissions trading scheme to the public, environmentalists say. The comments came as former Prime Minister Bob Hawke called on the Government to launch a public education campaign in response to newly installed Liberal leader Tony Abbott slamming the proposed scheme as "a great big tax". Opinion polls have suggested an overwhelming majority of Australians do not understand the emissions trading scheme, which will force businesses to buy permits to pollute in a bid to tackle climate change. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/environment/please-explain-ets-could-fail-due-to-ignorance-20091201-k3zd.html
Campaign The vast majority of Hong Kong people know nothing about carbon trading, yet the Chinese govt has announced it will be trialed in China. We need to change that almost complete lack of awareness to an active debate. Run the Carbon Trading Game in all schools in HK. This is a golden opportunity for the UWC movement to reach out to the public of HK with its message and demonstrate its relevance. All it needs is a dozen or so volunteers and a few million HK$.
