Matter What is matter? All matters fill the space, have mass, and can be in the form of different states. Basically, there are three states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. The state of certain matter depends on its temperature. For example, water becomes ice (solid) in the low temperature and water (liquid) in the room temperature. At the higher temperature, water changes into vapour (gas). Every state of matter has specific properties that can be used to identify the matter itself.
3.1 To investigate the property of matter and application in daily life. Basic Competence Menyelidiki sifat-sifat zat berdasarkan wujudnya dan penerapannya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari
Apparatus and Materials a stone block a cup of water a balloon flower
Procedures Use the measuring cylinder to measure 50 mL of water. Pour the 50 mL of water into a glass. What is the shape of the water after you pour it into the glass? By using a small board marker, write a mark on the glass where the water surface is shown. measuring cylinder Does the water has mass?
Now pour the water into a cup. What is the shape of the water after you pour it into the cup? By using a small board marker, write a mark on the part where the water surface is shown. Then, measure the volume of the water. Does the volume of the water change? Does the water occupies space?
Blow air into the balloon to inflate it and tie it so that the balloon is not deflated. What is the shape of the air in the balloon? Then, push the balloon slowly. Can you change the shape of the air? Does the air has volume and occupies space?
conclusion Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter has weight because its mass is acted upon by the earth’s gravity. Matter has volume as it occupies space Almost everything around us matter. All living thing and non living things are matter. a. Human beings, animal, and plants are examples of living matter. b. Air, water and soil are example of non- living thing..
inference Some things are not matter. For example, heat, light and sound are not matter because they do not have mass and do not occupy space.
Test your self What is matter? How would you know that object is a matter?
Ant – heat – metal – carbon dioxide – light – donkey – pine tree - petrol a. Which of the objects listed above are matter? Explain your answer. b. Give three other examples of matter. A boy blows air a plastic bag. a. What happens to the plastic bag b. What inference can you make from your answer in (a)? c. Does air has mass? Give a reason for your answer.
A vacuum is not a matter Based on the statement above, answer the following question. a. Does a vacuum occupy spice? b. Can you weigh a vacuum? Give a reason for your answer.
