Summary: This book depicts the artwork and writings of Mohamud about his journey from the refugee camp in Kenya to the United States in 2005. Mohamud, a native of Somalia, is a 5th grade student and his first language is Mai Mai. His family was stationed at a refugee camp in Kenya. He started school in South Dakota as a kindergartener in an Elementary Immersion Center. This center caters to the newly arrived immigrants for whom English is a second language. Mohamud is a very hard working student who has a flare for art. He also loves animals, which often is the center of his artwork. His book will capture your interest, heighten your awareness, and keep you cognizant of the struggles that he and his family have endured in acculturating while maintaining their heritage.
