Slide 2

BRIEF Our brief is to make a music video in the film noir style using the track: Spin Spin Sugar by Sneaker Pimps (Armand’s Dark Garage Mix). http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zciWTiCdEsA

Slide 3

IDEA NOIR We are going to incorporate noir-esqe techniques into our video. This will include:- -the use of reflections - Mirrors windows etc. -the use of shadows TRIPPY-NESS Our video is going to use camera tricks in a noir-esqe way. For example having the main character look in the mirror, see another person in the mirror next to him, look round and see nothing there. We were also thinking about using shots with florescent colour effects and also maybe filming some shots with strobes. We may also copy shots from horror films as intertextual references. In essence our video will consist of an urban narrative with a strange, trippy psychosis theme.

Slide 4

Product analysis Constructed narrative with continuity editing. Amplification, shots can be in time with the music. Relationships between lyrics, music and visuals. Promote the band. Asynchronous narrative.

Slide 5

TECHNICAL ANALYSIS Length and amount of shots-not many shots longer than 2 or 3 seconds. Longer shots would be good in breaking down the narrative into sections-could convey a journey. A small range of shots sizes-mainly BCUs, CUs and MCUs; a few longer shots. Film noir video-very few static camera shots, camera is invariably panning or zooming in. Film noir themes-all in black and white, use of reflections etc.

Slide 6

AUDIENCE RESEARCH As a focus group. Aided our concept development because it widened our range of ideas-given different shot ideas e.g. shot over the shoulder into the mirror. Developed our idea of how we could embody the strangeness of the track e.g. the idea of a diabetic having a sugar rush. Gave us an idea of how the audience wanted to feel, wanted to be more involved in the video e.g. shaky camera shots, make the audience feel the way the character feels. Helped us have ideas to make the video postmodern.

Slide 7

Proposed idea. Narrative of intoxicated man. Our video will explore the depths of the human mind using film noir-techniques and camera tricks to show the flexibility of the mind. Our video will be surreal to match the mood of the trip-hop element of the song. The location and costume etc will be modern and slightly grimey to convey the garage beats and bassline. Will stand up to repeatability through the audience having difficulty in understanding the narrative.

Slide 8

Costume – Dark clothes Hoodies- covering faces Locations- back streets, must have street lights Tunbridge wells- very early morning High brooms with the gas works, more urban Types of shot- handy cam shots, not steady Time lapse shots Spinning Under cranked or just played at faster speed fish eye lense POV shots

Slide 9

What will be the biggest challenge? How will we overcome it? Our biggest challenge will be the setting that we are trying to achieve, it will be difficult to give the video a night time feel. To overcome this we will film it in the early hours of the morning, changing the contrast for the desired effect. Another potential problem is weather conditions which will affect the way the video can be edited together.

Slide 10

How will this video promote the band? Originality of the music video conveys the ideology surrounding modern dance and trip-hop genres. The fact that the band will not appear in the video will appeal to the smaller audience that these genres attract. Therefore they would watch the video actively. This means that the video doesn’t need to comodify the artist.
