13 Permanently Off Duty taxi is designed to cruise midtown at rush hour. Doorless feature underscores unavailability. Flat three-dollar rate for pleading with driver at stoplights. (Note pay slot.) U-Drive-It taxi dramatically slashes operating costs, but safety risks of rear-seat steering mean sky-high insurance that doubles average fare. Rumble-Seat cab leaves riders out in the open so driver in passenger-free cabin can smoke, talk on cell phone, turn up radio, and bask in pungent odorizer fumes unmolested. Kash-Kab concept adds welcome extra revenue streams from vending and slot machines, pay TV, and even electric shoe polisher. Captive rider must pay five dollars to exit.
