WP Clamping Method: Holding a W.P To an engine lathe depends mainly upon the geometrical features of the WP. 2

Slide 3

Holding Hollow Cylindrical WP: Cylindrical W.Ps Have a certain holding methods to the engine lathe but first we need to know if the WP is Hollow or Solid. Hollow Cylindrical W.Ps are either Tapered or Straight. 3 Cylindrical W.PS>Hollow> Tapered Cylindrical W.PS>Hollow> Straight Tapered Mandrel We use a Tapered Mandrel. The Mandrel is pushed inside the WP till it is fixed. We use a Straight Mandrel. We fix the W.P to the mandrel using a screw and nut. Straight Mandrel

Holding Solid Cylindrical WP: Solid Cylindrical W.Ps are either Short or Long. 5 Cylindrical W.PS>Solid> Short Cylindrical W.PS>Solid> Long We Hold it using the 3-Jaw Chuck or using Collets. 3-Jaw Chuck We Hold it using “Between Centers” Method. “Between Centers” Method. Collets

Holding Non-Cylindrical WP: Non-Cylindrical W.Ps Have a certain holding methods to the engine lathe but first we need to know if the WP is Regular Shape or Irregular Shape. Regular shapes are either Short or Long. 7 Regular Shape>Long Regular Shape>Short We use the 4-Jaw Chuck. 4-Jaw Chuck We use a face plate. We use it for any W.P with long regular shape ex: triangle or squared WPs.

Holding Irregular Shaped W.Ps Irregular Shaped W.Ps are such as perpendicular-Pipes and V-Pipes. 9 Non-Cylindrical WPs>Irregular Shapes Irregular Shaped WPs cannot be clamped in a chuck and are, therefore, mounted on a plate fixture that is attached to faceplate while using a counterweight.
